94 grandam starter

Alright i just bought a 94 grandam, came with no starter..so i whent out and bought a new starter, installed it and it grinds..i looked in the manual and it shows that its has a shim. but the one i bought dindnt come with any..and when i got the car there wasnt any either...so can someone tell me if it should just bolt up..or it does need a shim, if so how think is the shim. thanks

What engine?

Could be the flywheel teeth are chiped/broken.
Did you look at that when the starter was put on?

A shim is needed though. heres a pic

Where ever you bought the starter should carry the one you need for your car. They varry in thinkness from car to car, engine to engine.

alright i have the 3.1 v6 and i whent to abunch of parts store and all they have is a package of starter shims for all models of Gm's...so i bought the pack but now i need to know the thickness of the shim.
can anyone tell me the thinkness of shim required?

I'm not exactly sure, but try .016 in(.406mm).
If thats not it try .020"(.508mm).

Its not listed in any of my books, which is weird :screwy:
