Here is what it is:

Make sure you have the right year.
The ball joint end usually goes or the bushing below goes. Test with a 3 ft. screwdriver or pry bar.

I don't know your jeep's year, but they're all symilar.
The TRACK BAR is the one who prevents the front differential from moving side-to-side. it is a one-part.(The ball joint and the bar are one piece)
1. start the car(this will make the test easier)
2.MAKE SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS IN PARK(AUTOMATIC) OR NEUTRAL(STANDARD),THE PARKING BRAKE IS ON AND THE REAR WHEELS ARE BLOKED.
3.you will need to look under the car(get underneath from the front of the vehicle),while someone stears side-to-side in a short range(angle).
4.now you are facing up.the track bar is mounted to the differential(to your right) rubber bushing and bolt-nut, and to a braket(to your left),ball joint.
look for movement on both sides.
_If movement of the track bar at the differential mounting(to your right),replace the ruber bushig.
_If movement of the track bar at the braket mounting.......
Make sure where the play is.*you might think is the ball joint*,but it also might be the PIN NUT.
The PIN NUT gets loose whithin time making the pin to get loose from its hole(cone hole).
You will need to apply rust remover-penetrant(the strongest you can find) to the nut-pin thread, better wait for one day and applay again. let it work. then try to tight the nut.
IT HAPPENED TO ME.I thought it was the ball joint and I bought the track bar($87.00)Lucky me I new how to change it. Otherwise it would've cost me $250
good luck.

Haven't hear from Sil there yet...but the the track bar is easy to change.
Don't take this one to the dealer.

Best way to test it is to lay under the Jeep and have someone (you trust) start it and turn the steering wheel back and forth and look for play or movement at the bushings. there may be some movement, afterall the bushings are rubber, but you should be able to judge if its excessive.
