Odometer question

Is the odometer reading stored in the dash panel or in the cars computer? Im looking at getting some glow gagues and was thinking about picking up a used dash panel so that i can put them in without risking screwing up my dash panel, and so i can put them in at my leisure without having to give up my car for the duration. Anyone know?

The odometer module is located in the IP Panel Cluster. Disconnecting the IP to do gauge mods should not affect it.
