97 Jetta 2.0 bucking/missing under acceleration

Hi All,
My Wife's 97 2.0 is a bit off. It starts and runs fine, but if you give it too much gas pedal at lower RPM's , or floor it to pass on the Highway, the motor starts cutting out, like the ignition is lost momentarily. I'm not talking about a random cylinder misfire, it's more like On-off-on-off-on. As RPMS increase, it goes away.
This is a 5-speed; it runs fine otherwise, and weather/moisture doesn't seem to be a factor- just engine loading. Cap, wires, rotor less than a year old.
Any ideas?
