rsx-s vs taurus sho

these tauruses are no joke. it's a friend of mine from work, 5 in the morning on the way to work. he rolls up next to me and starts revving at a red light. we take off, he has me until about 2nd gear when my vtec kicks in. i get him by about a half a car length and i hear his tranny slip, thats it, i pull ahead. keep in mind, this was an auto taurus, he says he gets about 213hp at the flywheel, my rsx-s is stock, until tomorrow when i install my injen.

ha ha ha ........ compared to a turbo VTEC gains do not kick and that is blaitantly obvious when racing a turbo :finger:

did you ever drive an integra vtec or a prelude vtec, they kick in, u can literally feel the "bang", the rsx is smoother. if you had you'd know. and i've driven alot of turbos, you act like a turbo will blast you into outer space, this is not the case my friend. even in a 911 or a twin turbo z, the "kick" isn't really that significant, now when i floor my 351 in my '69, thats a kick.

your a dumbass v-tec isnt a power adder like a turbo or supercharger its a valve train system that is computerized.

You are dumber because it is a power change. Also it is not V-tec it is VTEC. VTEC keeps the Horse power on the Dyno from flating out in a lower RPM range. That is why a VTEC cam shaft has 3 lobes per section. When VTEC turns on it kicks on the third lobe.

no it isnt smart guy a power adder is classified as a turbo, supercharger or nitrous. By your definition, intake is a power adder.

The term "Power-adder" is generally reserved for when someone is talking about adding nitrous, adding a supercharger, or adding a turbo or two. Everything else is considered a bolt-on, aftermarket part. Let's be honest, no one gives a crap about the rated horsepower for a part, because unless you car is totally built, it's not going to give you the rated hp. They may add power, but they're not in the same league as the others.

Off the subject a minute:rolleyes: The SHO can be made pretty fast, if his trans had not been slipping he might just of walked you.

The funny thing about SHO's are that the later, V8 versions are mid-to-high 15-second cars, and the earlier V6 models were high 14's to low 15's.

Oh in race-talk...power-adder, like everybody else pointed out, is a turbo, supercharger, or nitrous-oxide. In all actuality, this is untrue, because you can't call a car without any of this as not having a power-adder, and running 13's or better, when stock, they run 15's or slower. It's not that they don't have power-adders, they're just naturally-aspirated, as opposed to having forced-induction.

In real-world talk, as itsmeek pointed out, ANYTHING that adds power is a power-adder...racing circles are not usually the breeding grounds for Nobel Prize laureates...

Oh, and for me, who is a proud VTEC junkie, VTEC kicks...you feel it kick in when you hit the RPM necessary to switch to the big lobe. The only thing wrong about itsmeek's statement is he said he felt it kick in in 2nd gear...it should've "kicked-in" in first gear too. But then again, in fairness, he might've meant WHEN his VTEC kicked in in 2nd gear, is when he achieved enough acceleration to pass the SHO. Oh, and one last thing, if he didn't have that "kick" from his "power-adder", do you think his car would've had the balls to pass the SHO?

P.S. Turbo "kicks" too...but mostly because of turbo-lag...this is why an Eaton supercharger does not "kick"-in at any point after you first mash in the pedal...the boost is there from 0 RPM all the way to redline.

i did pass him when my vtec ENGAGED in 2nd gear :D i could run a list of cars, but why?? i will never sit here and say i'm an engineer type because i'm not. i'm a dba, which makes me sick in the head in the first place. I owned a dealership, thats why I say i've driven more cars then most or probably all out there. We dealt high end imports and sports cars, so I've driven the porsches, the M3's, the vettes, and the ferraris. They're quick cars, and I'll never say I can beat one in my RSX-S unless I put thousands of dollars into it, which just isn't worth it to me. I could go get a vette and put not even close as much into it and never be beat by a street-legal 4 banger, but you never know...i've seen a dodge colt and a chevy astro that ruled v-street (d.c.). the astro surprised me at first when he blew my doors off vs my 98 vette last year.

and one more thing, can u PLEASSSEEEE send me a link that says ford made a v8 sho? i coulda sworn they put the pushrod v8 from the 'stang in the sho one year, but the guy that works w/me -(SHO enthusiast); swears they never put a V8 into a production model of a taurus.

In that case, I know you've driven more than me if you work at a dealership, enough said.

i tought all SHOs were v8s, but i think they were horizontally mounted, like a V6. they were at a smaller angle as opposed to a 45 degree V8

hmm interesting would that be the same supercharged v6 that is in the thunderbird SC?

well the thunderbird sc had a 3.8l v6 in it the taurus sho a 3.0 liter, both made 220 hp. wow.

Well, it comes down to each person has their own definition of what a power adder is. I, for one, associate the words "Power Adder" with forced induction units, like the three mentioned above. Everything else is bolt ons. Your definition is more generalized, to encompass everything.

Ex:
You say it's Black, I say it's Onyx Black. The car is still Black...

So how come in all motor drag circuits, youre allowed to have boltons and built internals if the rules specifically state no power adder?

In the 89-95 manual SHOs came a NA 3.0L V6 putting out 220 HP and around 200 TQ. The 93-95 autos came with a 3.2L V6 to bump the TQ up to cope with the slushbox. The 96-99 SHOs only came with and auto and a 3.4L V8 putting out 235 HP and 225 TQ. the 89 and 90s are the fastest because they are the lightest

i have to agree. any forced induction i would consider a power adder, ive driven all kinds of hondas and acuras and even though twin cam ones move.... which would really add more power, a supercharger...or a exhaust? :rolleyes: you be the judge.

It kicks in in your riceboy mind. VTEC sounds like shit to me. Makes the motor feel like it has a flat spot in my opinion. I would "kick" back and try to learn. :finger:

First off, not to flame, but you just made yourself sound like a jealous fool. Did you want to get a VTEC engine in your '89 and just couldn't afford it? THAT is how you just sounded to me. I know I'll get a reaction from you on this...but if I don't, I apologize, you're a better man than what you sounded like above.

Second, do you EVEN know how VTEC/iVTEC(Honda), or VVTi(Toyota), or VarioCam(Porsche), MIVEC(Mitsubishi-Japan/Europe only), VANOS(BMW), and the variable cam-timing tricks employed by Nissans and Mazdas in Japan and Ferrari in all their newer models and some older ones. You act like you know something and he doesn't...telling HIM to learn...he OWNED a dealership, I am sure he knows enough. Bottomline, don't speak ahead of your brain wavelength.

Oh, and Ferrari INVENTED variable-cam timing for it's F1 cars...Honda came second and PERFECTED it and won 2 F1 manufacturer's championships...and was the first to use it on a road-car(late '80's Civics and CR-X's, NSX in the US).

That is the statement that ade you sound like a noob, well in my mind anyhow, unless I am reading into it wrong, and if I am; I'm sorry. Vtec in NO way will ever dream of adding as much power as turbo does.

now that i read that, it does sound like a stupid comment. i guess i didn't word it correctly. i was trying to explain that the way it "Feels" when an engine reaches vtec or i-vtec is the same way it feels when a turbo comes on. it's the same feeling of "more power" i know that vtec isn't anywhere close to the rush of a turbo....have u ever driven or rode in a 911s, i loved it when we got those into my dealership.

To Carnutt- No I am not jealous of VTEC, i'm actually proud of the fact that my non vtec car spanks 90% of the vtec cars I encounter. I would even run Meeks RSX if he wanted. (Dont bother meek, my cousin just got a 2002 and his has already been romped on) Last year I made $43K.
I would hope that you wouldnt put me in the non affordable category as far as putting a VTEC motor in my hatch. My civic is my commuter. I wanted something that would just get me around on the highways faster. Getting around 495 by DC is hell with a 1.5. Ask meek he should know. And yes I have a perfectly good understanding about how VTEC, VVTi,etc. works. Thank you for that wonderful definition. I have seen it on the net about 100 times before. Perhaps Im to the point on this site where I shouldnt come here anymore. Numbskulls are everywhere it seems. I would like to see some posts that teach me stuff. Rarely do I see this anymore. Maybe moderators should post stuff. Am I missing a forum that is more informative?

Thanks for letting me win. I wasnt bragging about making 43K last year. I simply said that so he would understand that I made enough money to afford a vtec motor. So youre saying you made $301,000 when you were 22? Mmmmkay. I would think you would be rocking something a little more luxorious if you made 6 figures when you were my age. But hey, thats just what I would drive if I made that kind of money. Whats in your 69 mustang?

oh the stang is definitely not a fast one. it's a convertible and i'm showing it (trying to keep it original), it still has the original 351 windsor in it. and lol i've been waiting for this rsx-s for about 3 years, I have other cars I drive that are higher priced cars, but have always admired the hp output u get from a 4 cylinder w/200+ hp.
