Trip Meter

Hi,
I`ve just replaced the battery and starter motor on my 525i. I notice, now, that the illuminated trip meter has ceased to record, staying stuck at 0000 miles. The reset button does nothing. (The total mileage - part of the same unit, is still recording)
Any ideas?
