Speed Sensor - 2nd time + Fuel Filter

Hi folks,

This is kind of an "Info Only" post, just in case someone has similar issues.

Last year about this time, I posted a problem that had to do with the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in my wife's Jeep. Well it happened again - the speedometer was jumping all over the place, mostly at speeds above 60 MPH, but recently it was doing it at "city speeds" too.

So once again I put in a new VSS. This time I got it from my "regular" parts store. I took it for a test drive and it seems to be rock-solid on the speedometer again.

Another issue that was reported by my wife was hesitation when accelerating hard (mainly getting on the freeway). As a "blind shot" I had my son (mechanic-in-training) change the fuel filter. It looked like it had NEVER been changed before, or at least it had been a very long time (crusty stuff on all the hardware involved). Jeep currently has about 126,000 miles on it.

We went for another test drive (he had experience the hesitation before) and everything seems to be OK now, even when the AC was switched on and I was pressing the gas pretty hard.

So hopefully that has fixed up the two reported problems. I'm sure I will hear back if there are other issues.

Take Care,

AlohaBra

Thank you for posting.

Well, it looks like you have a 92 Xj. If you still have hesitations still you might want to look at:
*spark plugs
*throttle position sensor

(Of course...it could be other things)

I just put a big bottle of "Techron" in my gas tank for good measure.

Aloha,

I have already gotten feedback from my wife. She says it runs much better - "Even driving around town. Much smoother." She says that she didn't really notice that it was running "bad", but now it is better. Maybe because the fuel filter was getting blocked up gradually and cutting off the fuel supply.

I have replaced the TPS within the last year or so and adjusted the shift cable (between the throttle & tranny) at the same time. It was running & shifting real smooth back then. The spark plugs were replace when we had the heads replaced a while back too. I'm not exactly sure when that was, but I guess I could check my posts in here to figure it out.

I don't know exactly why it runs better, but I figure the right amount of fuel and the right inputs to the computer makes it run better. As long as she is happy, I'm happy. :smokin:

Take Care,
