Hey guys, New to the eclipse thing. I picked up my buddies 1999 RS eclipse with the shitty 420 A motor. It's a five speed with an exhaust package, cold air intake, strut bar, lowering springs, system, some other mods n stuff but it's just not as fast as i'd like it to be.
I was looking around some past posts and various sites on the net showing people with built 420A's carrying turbo under the hood and i am looking in that direction. I have the money to spend no more than 2K on this project but I was wondering if anyone knew of the part list I need to accomplish the turbo RS. Please help guys..and don't say buy a GSX , I'm poor lol.

There's a DIY turbo kit on www.2gnt.com > Tech Articles, but without upgraded internals, I would only push ~6-7, and even then the motor won't last as long as it's intended to.

I'm talking about pistons, h-beams, valves and cams as well. i'l buy a used turbo setup i don't care about that but I do want nice and strong internals though and lower the compression to roughly 8.5:1 so I can push up around 8 - 10 psi without issues.

I think with a build motor it will run you more than $2k. Your going to heed to have machine work done new bearings rods pistons rings hardware then the turbo kit plus a tuning device

You will never be able to build an engine, piece together a turbo setup, and get support mods for $2000. Just wont happen. What did you get the car for?

If you disasemble and assemble the motor yourself you may be able to get the motor built for 2k.
But you will just have a built motor. No turbo setup.

For $2k, you can get JUST the motor built like defiancy said, but this does not include anything else. No fuel system, no turbo, no exhaust, nothing. Unless you find some really good deals, to get a built 420a will run you roughly $4-5k

If you want a fast car, you could probably get $4000-$5000 for the RS depending on the car then take that money plus your $2000 and get a 1g AWD. Hell, even if you didnt throw in any extra money from selling the RS, you could get a 1g AWD that would run circle around an RS with many 2-3 times as much money into it.

That has to be the dumbest idea I have ever heard of in all of mankind. Might as well buy a Geo and drop in a blown 454. :disappoin

I basically got the car for free which is why I am willing to invest money into it. I can't get anything out of it due to the mileage , almost at 200,000 miles for a 1999 = no value.
I've built a couple motos minus turbo kits but as far as pistons, rods, bearings , crank etc.. I can do that all my self which is why I was looking to only spend about 2K ( no shop labor B.S. charges ) I don't mind if it runs me more though I just have 2K on hand right now. Judging by what you all say, I think I need to look into new lower compression pistons and bearings first of all.
However like I said, I am new to the eclipse, I can follow directions to a T but I don't know where to start looking for my internals. Anyone kick me down some info on that would be much appreciated. I think the turbo kit itself will wait until after winter when I have another 2 K on hand lol

As for engine internals, just look on the internet man. I know ebay has some reputable kits that sell piston/rod combos, might wanna check those out.

Bleh..ebay. I refuse to tune my car with anything non brand name off ebay.
The basic set up I am looking forward to finally building is something like the below picture :

I would like to go with eagle h beams, weisco pistons, i don't know where to look for a crank/bearing kit though , valves are everywhere and would like some personal opinions on those.

I dont think I would worry to much about the crank. Usually they hold up pretty well but I guess I dont know about the neon motor

Yeah, stick to the OEM crank. Check eBay for package deals on rods/pistons, I know for a 4g63 you can get IIRC Ross pistons and Eagle rods for like $690 which is pretty good cosidering separate from SBR they are like $350 and $450. I have seen good deals on Scat rods too for the 4g63, like $250. I dont know about the 420a though. If you have some engine building know how and a willingness to get this 420a fast and willing to spend 2k or more I think it would be a good thing. Especially if you got the car for free. I will get back to you on what I would do to a 420a tonight, I have 9 billion things to do today.

I wasn't talking about off brand stuff, I'd NEVER buy anything off-brand like internals or anything importatnt. I meant that there are some reputable sellers that sell everything as a "kit". But in those kits you'll get usually Ross or JE pistons, Eagle (very rarely Crower) rods, bearings, and piston rings. Just check it out man. Like Dustin said, you should be able to pick up a decent one for around $700. And your crank will be fine, no use replacing that. Just make sure it's not scarred or marked or anything, otherwise it'll toast those new bearings ASAP. It might help to get it polished just to be sure. :2cents:

I know a guy at the local SLS performance shop here in SLC,UT. He's looking into some crower and wiseco stuff for me if he can get it a little over cost and make minimal profit off me. He's a cool kat and i'm sure he'll order me the right stuff. The crank is a concern of mine mainly because of the fact its the original motor that has never been rebuilt and its almost at 200K for the mileage.
I want to take the block .040 over but I don't know if that will be too much bore. What would you guys recomend for the 2.0 DOHC 6 bolt neon motor ?
Keep in mind, I don't need a 800 HP monster sleeper from hell. I just want to be able to hit 160 mph and push about 300 bhp max out of the car.
Eric is going to custom fab me up a log style with wastegate flange turbo manifold for price of materials so around 40 - 50 bucks. After this point, he's going to do a port match for exhaust and intake manifold and then we'll jump into the internals. I'll look on ebay a bit but the whole paypal thing seems..sketchy..wish there were better deals locally :(
Anywho so what I basically need is some lower compression piston/ring/bearing kit with some better than oem rods lol , will I need to look into new valves ? Injectors ? I have a fuel management kit and a FP regulator sitting in the trunk right now but useless without the turbo :P I know i'll need the 255lp fuel pump which is on order. Will I be ok with stock cams ? other than that, I should be basically set besides the minor crap like intercooler, piping, bov, wastegate, oil feed line, filter.
let me know if im on the right track...this will be my first turbo build and i'd like to make it a success ! Gotta represent for the neons

Heres what I pulled off wiseco's website for the 420A.
If I choose the pistons with the .040 over and 8.8:1 compression ration, are all the other specs the same or will I need to get some machine work besides the boring done ? I would like to see what the 88.0 mm bore has to offer as far as hp gains.

Well it sounds like you really wanna build this up. Personally, I think .040 is too much, I'd go .030 max, probaby just stay at 20 over to be safe. Like I said, you shouldn't have to worry about the crank if the car has been taken care of. Now if it was blown up, crank ground, and oversized bearings put in it at one time, then I would NOT run that crank for one second (crank grinds on the 420a weaken them somewhat), but if it's the original crank with no work done to it, just take it in and have them "service" it (i'd just polish it) and that baby will be good to go.
It would be a good idea to go with some Stainless Steel valves, and if you're doing all the upgrading, why stick with stock cams? Go with some Crower 3's or Crane 16's (I believe those are the turbo grind) and you'll see a big jump in power over stock cams. As for injectors go, I don't know what's out there for the 420a, but you'll definitely want way bigger than stockers. I gotta go to work here now but I'll try do some looking when I get home and see what I can pull up.
As for machine work besides boring the block. You'll probably want to get the head decked just to make sure she's nice and flat (with 200k, I'm sure the car has been overheated once or twice), but other than that you should be good to go. Maybe take the bare block and head in to get them cleaned up nice, but you shouldn't need too much machine labor.

I was thinking of just going downt o my local pick it out yourself junk yard and grabbing a block and head out of a neon or an eclipse since they only charge you 75.00 for a long block, untested of course lol...whoknows if it even works however, it will save me the hassle of having to put my eclipse down and out for the winter while building.
i'll take your advice on the .020 over, you guys know more than me abuot what these things can handle. I'll be looking for some stainless steel valve kits with stem seals and all that mumbo jumbo here this weekend so I can at least start piling up the parts I need.
One question : As far as the eclipse and neon motors, the motor and head have the same casting numbers ?

I have no idea, I'd just stick with and Eclipse/Talon/Avenger motor because they are a DIRECT swap. I'm not too sure about the Neon motor though.

the head on the 420a neon motor is reversed(similer to the 4g63 in the dsms and in the evo. It can be done but then yout IM is in the front and your going to have to do some modifacation to have the exhaust mani in the rear
