Primer

hey guys... i'm looking for an answer on the differences of primer. Mainly Automotive VS. Tamiya, does anybody know if there is a difference in the actual chemistry of the primers? Will i get a better finish using one over the other? because ever since i've started using primer i've only been using automotive cause it was what i had around the garage, in addition it's cheaper!! So what do you guys think? who has used both?

Even though it's more expensive, I prefer Tamiya primer. It goes on so smooth and in very thin coats-it's made for models so the paint thickness is better suited for a model.

A lot of people swear by Duplicolor sandable primer. I like the cheap Varsity primer sold at Pep Boys, but it's got lousy nozzles, better to add a bit of retarder to it and airbrush it. I've found all the aerosol primers to go on thicker and require more polishing out prior to painting the color coats. The shinier the primer, the shinier the color coats. I even use 4000-6000 grit polishing cloths on Tamiya primer before spraying their paint.

It depends. If you have had to do allot of bodywork you need a filling type automotive primer or KRYLON sandable primer. If not Tamiya is the way to go. Duplicolor has a primer-sealer that is pretty fine pigment and cheaper than Tamiya.

You can conceal more sins with automotive primer, so use it if major mods are involved. Otherwise I would use the model primers, as they are much thinner and finer and cover well, though pricey!

i see i see.....asides from the thickness and better ability to hide bigger blemishes how does automotive prime fair when it comes to final paint coat compared to automotive. In other word how much better if so is the tamiya primer in terms of gripping the paint and the overall paint finish?
