Here a few highlights from tonight's task of getting one head off. Internal parts of engine are pretty bad. It has been overheaded six or seven times. This time it didn't make it.

What's the best way to clean all this?

When my '94 finally bit the dust (spun out the rod bearings at 318,000 miles) I opted to buy a '95 engine from a salvage yard- ($500- 103,000 miles) and replace the entire engine- was meerly a plug and play ordeal- I figure I reset my clock on my van- plus I got all the spare parts like coils, modules, sensors, another CMPFI unit all for $500,

You probably have bearing damage underneath- with that high of mileage- I would find a used engine and go with that- The worst thing that can happen is you rebuild the top end-then 10,000 miles later you spin a rod bearing because of the coolant in the oil damage- I have seen it many times- not worth rebuilding the top only- go with a whole new engine- or buy a used engine- just my experience..........plus no cleaning!!

i had the same issue with my 89 half ton pickup and what i did was get a couple of diifferent types of wire wheels and just hooked them on my drill and ground off what i could get off with either gasoline or brake cleaner

good luck!

I second the new motor. Junkyards are awesome. I'd go that route. Ive seen rebuilt engines from some places for less than a grand. Quality is so so, but it's better than what's probably in that oil pan.

If the entire engine is stripped down some machine shops put them into I think a 1200 degree oven. I think theyheat them for one hour. This burns off all oil and ect. Then they blow them out to remove all dust. This is for cast iron only not aluminum.
At this time the block can be rebored if not cracked. And a valve job can be done. All springs and valves are removed first before heating.
