Brake Dust

I have a lot of black residue on my rims and I was wondering if it was brake dust from the calipers. If so is there any way to stop this from happening.

Unless you are driving through mud or something its probably brake dust. There really isn't much you can do to completely prevent it other then switching to wheels that cover up more. Other then that a good wheel cleaner is pretty much all you can do. Cleaning them every time you wash your car will make it easier then waiting for them to turn black. Just be careful of leaving any chemicals on alloy wheels for too long.

Try Axxis Deluxe Plus brake pads.

You can get dust covers that mount behind the wheel/tire. They have air slots in them. They work pretty well. Make sure the slots face front so the air can get to the brakes. NOt aware of any evidence they interfere with the braking. Bavarian Autosport has them. They're called Kleen Wheels/ $36/00.

Or you can change your brake pads to a better quality pad with less producing brake dust ability. I have done this and they produce a lot less dust on my rims. YEAH!!! I have been told that they also eat up your disks a lot quicker... Get some, Give Some, LOL....

Do not install kleenwheels because then your calipers will heat up and malfunction. Install new ceramic brake pads front and rear. Thay heat up less and do not produce black dust.

I've never had a problem with my kleenwheels, and not everyone has the cash to go spring for Ceramic disks when a set of kleenwheels will work just fine. If you don't wanna do that, then just don't be lazy and take five minutes out of your day at the end of your day and wipe the wheels clean.

What is your motive Mr. Cassiesman? Do you sell kleenwheels? I have worked as a BMW mechanic for many years and I am familiar with the history of BMW and kleenwheels. They stopped selling them because they were causing heat problems with the brake calipers. That is tha mechanism that holds the brake pads and when brakes are applied the car stop. Now if you use them BMW of North America will void your warranty......did you know that? Lastly I said to use ceramic brake pads and not discs.....do you know the difference? I am bothered because I don't want people spreading wrong information. Sorry

Motive? None at all. And I have 56k miles on my 325i with a 50k mile warrenty, so I'm not to worried about voiding a warrenty. And to top it off, of those 56k miles, 40 or so were done with the kleenwheels. I had kleenwheels on when I had my 25k brake job, done by my BMW dealership, with no warrenty problems at all. Maybe your dealership is different, I dunno.

And why would suggesting someone to buy something that has worked for me make me a sales person for them? If I buy a nice shirt, and say hey, its a nice shirt, you should buy one too, does that make me a sales person for them?

And to top it all off, like I said. If its really that big of a deal to you, and you don't wanna buy anything, just take five seconds out of your day and a washcloth and wipe your wheels clean at the end of the day. For fucks sake, so many people that I know that own BMWs are so god damned lazy, its not even funny. Its like...I don't wanna spend a few minutes cleaning my wheels, boo hoo. You have a 30K+ car, get over it.

Its not wrth even talking to you especially when you know nothing about any subject you are talking about. And as for you language there is no excuse for that. You know a man only shows his lack of intelligence when he talks that way. If I were you I would take some vocabulary classes. Sure has been good talking with ya!!!!!!!

Whatever bro. Good to know that a long term BMW Mechanic has the debate skills of a two year old. Anyways, back to the OP, and off topic.

I have never had a problem with my kleenwheels. If you wanna crank out cash for new brakes and all that good stuff, then go for it. If not, thats gravy. Just my advice.

I own my own shop, and for the last 2 years I've been selling Wagner Thermo-Quiet pads on every brake job. To date, I've had zero performance complaints and the customers love how clean their rims stay.

P.S. I am also a master BMW tech and would never recommend the dust shield approach regardless of manufacturer.
