93 - Cpi

I am borrowing a friends astro while I am working on changing head gaskets. The thing runs terribly rough. Here are a few symptoms: black soot above the tailpipe, sucks gas, takes off like a race horse by letting off the brake. Also it seems as though you have to fight it hard when slowing down until about ten miles per hour and then it seems as the transmission disengages and then it is easier to slow down. I think it just needs a tune up, but I don't know where to start with the CPI. I have a 93 TBI so I am real familiar with it.
Any help on where to start (adjust idle, timing, etc)???
Thanks

sound a lot like vacuum problems... Not sure. Tune up couldn't hurt. I'd search for common cpi problems too. Good luck.

Because of the rough, high idle "takes off like a race horse by letting off the brake", I'd start with a tuneup. Check the rotor and cap, that will give you indication of how long it's been since the last one. Also on a 93 you should change the spark plug wires too if thay look origional.
