a further update...

the front suspension/steering assembly is now attached with... of course... some extra details!

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02680.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02681.jpg

according to my references Hasegawa have missed a whole piece out of this, I dont know what it is called, possibly an anti-roll bar maybe, anyway this should fasten to the rear of the front uprights and has two links which attach to its position, I have scratched this from plastic rod and for the curved section I used metal rod, I have also added the brake cables which are attached the inner side of the calipers and then run into the front section somewhere (still need to tidy the ends), I added P/E rivet heads and alu tape to (very roughly) similate bolts.

I have pointed out the extras in the following pictures...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02677.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02676.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02673.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02672.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02670.jpg

On reflection I think the wire I used for the springs of the shocks may be a little too thick, however Im not going to break them down and start again now but it is something to remember for the future.

I need to finish attaching the links to the scratched bar and then I will move onto the radiator and it hoses etc.

An excellent model you're building here Sean. Some fine detailing work done so far and more to come I'm sure.I'm looking forward to more of your progress reports. Are you going to be finishing it in the Alitalia colours?

Sorry dumb question about the colour scheme. You answered that on the first page of your W.I.P

So you also build AMV and/or aircraft by any chance?

I would love it if you could show a photo of you r mini tap and die thingybob, please.

Hi Sean
Excellent build !!!
I will be watching this thread closely because I will start building my 1/12 Doyusha Lancia Stratos Monte Carlo shortly.
You mention about the Sportscar magazine as reference materials, other than this , which book has more details photos ?
I pick up a Japanese magazine call " I Love Lancia ". I am thinking about buying " Lancia Stratos Thirty Years Later " but that is quite a expensive book.

Hello,

"RALLY" and "RALLY CARS" from Reinhardt Klein are among best references even if those books aren't easy to find anymore...

small update,

completed work on the front by finishing the detail on the suspension and steering assemblies, I have just received delivery of my nuts and bolts from Scale Hardware (Highly Recommended!) so i added a couple of these onto the bottoms of the cross member.
Also attached is the radiator - I used the Acu-stion grills (front and back). I then drilled the backside of the radiator at the top left corner and bottom right. Into these holes I inserted two hoses along with small fastners made from Alu Tape and fusewire, these hoses drop down to the bottom of the car and then disappear down the transmission tunnel. As I am not opening the hood this is as much detail as Im going to put into here.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02689.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02691.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02690.jpg

and so, armed with my nuts and bolts its back onto the engine. First up I replaced the end section of the resin version with the plastic part from the kit as this is much better detailed. I then filled any gaps remaining with the filler. I also test fit the axle just to see where we are in terms of fit and dimensions before going any further... and so far so good!

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02696.jpg

Finaly I have been working on a scratched airbox which sits on top of the engine, I made this from a copper tube for the centre section and two pieces of thick wire for either side, moulded together with filler. A little more refining to go but nearly there with this.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02699.jpg

In the Studio 27 etch set for that car there is a beautiful Grill Air box which looks extremely detailed, I know this wont be the correct piece for this car however I am tempted to use it, will wait and see.

thanks again for all your comments

Looking great!

I cant wait to see how that airbox looks when finished - I'm sure it's going to look nothing like a piece of copper tube and 2 bits of wire puttied together...

SeanyG

further update...

the rear suspension got the same treatment as the front however I found a thinner piece of yellow tubing from the spares box, I think this looks much better.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02704.jpg

and so onto the engine - I gave it a coat of primer and then sprayed it matt alu. A quick test fit with the airbox in place.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02707.jpg

Once this was dry, I thinned a little Tamiya Smoke and gave the whole unit a wash. Once this was dry I gave it all a very light dry brush with polished alu.

The first of the details to be added is the distributor and plug leads, the main unit is the resin piece which comes with the TK, however I drilled the end to take the 6 plug leads and also drilled out each of the point of the engine block.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02711.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02712.jpg

For the ends of the leads I slipped a thicker hollow piece of tubing over the cable, glued the end in place and then pulled the larger tube to the end of the lead, this is to simulate the plugs.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02713.jpg

I also added some brass bolt heads to the top of the suspension mounts of the engine frame

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02714.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02715.jpg

All the work will be on the engine and detailing it up, with hoses and the like, hopefully more to come soon.

Hope you enjoy

distributor problem sorted and a little further plumbing added, there are two hoses which connect to the two oil inlets on the right, these them combine and lead to a round cylinder (will need scratchbuilding) which sits top left of the engine next to the bulkhead - if anyone knows what this is please enlighten me - I assume its oil linked.

Yes, absolutely, I know what this is. It is an oil collector. Because of the high-G turns that rally cars experience, oil could get forced out of the engine if it were not for that unit. Those two hoses from the oil fillers, which join together and attach to the can, are correct. There is then another hose from the top of the collector can which attaches to the air cleaner. This is for crankcase vapors. Finally, there is a hose on the bottom of the can, for the oil to go back to the engine. This attaches to the flat part of the oil pan on the backside of the engine--towards the bulkhead. There is a picture of that in the rallycars.com link that you posted earlier. I think that should answer your questions. Good work!

thanks klutz - glad you like the site, as with many things I have lots of plans for it however if only I had more time...

whenever I dry drush I like to use a slightly lighter tone than the area Im brushing ie. for black I use dark grey or dark alu, for grey i use white, for engines with a base colour of matt/dark alu I use polished alu etc.

I use this technique to a: add a little weathering to remove the 'brand new' look and b: just to bring a little depth to a part.

hope that helps

more progress...

the belt and pulleys that sit on the right of the engine. As you can see the resin part is hopeless...

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02722.jpg

So I took this apart and removed the moulded belt, I then thinned and drilled the bottom pulley, more thining on the top one and just had to clean the alternator up as this is nicely reproduced.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02724.jpg

These were painted according to my ref pics (mostly alu) with a little shading and highlights, also replaced the centre nut of the bottom pully with a brass nut. These were then attached and once dry, I cut a thin piece about 2mm wide out of Tamiya masking tape, painted it black and then wrapped this around the 3 wheels, I then touched up any areas that were still showing yellow from the tape and... job done!

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02732.jpg

As you can see I have also added two further hoses which lead to the Oil Collector (thanks to 924_CarreraGTS).
I have also managed to find a suitable cyclinder piece for the Collector, a few slight alterations and it will be perfect

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02731.jpg

Finally and again as you can see I have finished the airbox, a bit more shaping and sanding before this was painted with Revell's matt 85 (sort of tan colour) then while it was wet I dipped it into a pile of sawdust. I then let this dry and then gave it a second coat. Once this was dry, a little dry brushing with matt yellow followed by picking out the recess with dark earth. Im happy with this the texture is nice and uneven as the actual airbox was and the colour seem pretty accurate too.

Oh I love detailing engines!!!!

more again soon

Thanks

Matt,

I bought the Crazy Modeler etched saw set, this looks like any other photo-etched detail parts set you buy, these can be bought from HLJ or MMH, I think Tamiya also do a set and Hasegawa also. I also have a Tamiya saw, the blade is a little thicker but is good for cutting extra thick parts.
I will post a picture when I next update.

thanks for comments everyone and glad you like it so far.

update...

firstly I apologise for the poor quality pictures, my little Sony didnt do as well as it normally does and these are way too dark and too contrasty - will take some more in daylight next time.

I have added the exhaust pieces which attach to the engine, I got rid of the resin versions and made these from solder, I polished the solder first and then added a little Tamiya Clear Blue, Orange and Red to show heat staining.
I have never used solder before however it is easy to bend into the right shape and gives a really realistic metal effect.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02737.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02733.jpg

For the rest of the exhaust Im reverting back to the Hasegawa parts, I had to fill the silencers with filler as Hasegawa strangely decided to leave a big hollow in them. I will drill the ends to thin the pipes and get these painted up.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02742.jpg

Having completed this I then turned to chassis and engine surround, I built up the discs and suspension as per the front ones (I have still to add the brake cables), the rest went on as per the instructions but I added some brass nuts to the end of the suspension ends.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02739.jpg

So finally the engine went in, I have just got to add the axle for which Im using two pieces of metal rod (dont worry I can still get them in!!!)

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02745.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02743.jpg

I thought I had made an almightly b**ls up with the exhausts in terms of placement as with the end sections attached, one protrudes alot further out of the back end than the other one, but checking my ref pics I was relieved to see that is what they are like on the real car - very odd indeed!

Thanks for staying tuned and again sorry for the crap pics, more details on the engine to come next

a little further progress...

wheels are finished, these are the Studio 27 metal upgrades and are superb, these were simply primed and then sprayed with a good bright yellow. I added a set of Sakatsu valves and also ran a little thinned matt black into the centre recess and bolt holes. In the Acu-stion set there are some beautifully etched Lancia logo wheel centres but I dont think these were on the Rally cars, only on the street production models.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02750.jpg

Further details to the engine, I scratched an oil collector from an old piece from the spares box, I drilled a couple of holes and added joints for the two hoses to connect to. I know there is a 3rd hose however I have not included this one.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02748.jpg

Finally also added the coil just above the distributor, a single red cable is still to be added to this. I attached it using bare metal foil to simulate the bracket.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02749.jpg

more soon, hopefully!

More progress,

the engine is on hold while I build the two fuel tanks which sit either side of the engine. So i thought I would get on with a little decal work - I couldnt resist as the body is sprayed and ready.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02752.jpg

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02754.jpg

Finished the light pods, spoiler and louvre. On the spot light cover I am going to add a couple of metal catches either side which would hold it in place over the top of the lights.
For the louvre's bonnet pins I drilled two small holes, inserted a thin metal rod and placed the etched part through this - in effect almost exactly the way the real version works. There are a further 4 of these to add to the model.
The decals are going on well so far, as long as I use the obligatory Micro Set / Sol.

more again soon...

Final update of the day,

the rear section is almost complete, I have left off the 'Alitalia' wording on the side, I want to get the rear cover attached on the car first and then I can make sure all the decals on the sides are centred etc. The underside of the whole hood is painted matt black as per my ref pics.

For the race plate that sits on the top I used the S27 raised plate and added the kit decal over the top which gives a wonderful 3D effect to the decal as originally it was on these boards.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02763.jpg

with some careful masking the lower centre section of the tail was sprayed semi-gloss black

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02758.jpg

a further little close up of the excellent S27 bonnet catches, some of the most realistic I have seen yet.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02760.jpg

Finally, completed the light pod with two metal catches attached either side.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e331/ohanra/Lancia%20Stratos/DSC02761.jpg

Thanks again for staying tuned, unfortunately it may be a few days before I can get back onto the model now.

Would 100% recommend the kit, although Fujimi do one with an engine too - but hey - you could do it in the Pirelli colours, or the Marlboro or even the Chardonnay blue version. For me there was only ever going to be one choice - by far my favourite colour scheme.

thanks for your kind words guys, and another update for you...

finished detailing the battery. I added a tray built from plascard, a holding bracket made from etch sprue and wire and for the yellow terminals I used cable, I also found a decal to add just to liven it up at little.

I have also been busy making the two fuel tanks, these are again from plastic card, they are not quite a curved as the ones found in the original car but not too dissimilar. These were sprayed matt black and dry brushed with matt alu. I also added a little mounting bracket to the top section which attaches it to the frame and detailed this with a bolt head.

I am now trying to line up the rear hatch so I know where I to position the fuel caps that sit on the top of these tanks, there is also some clear cabling to attaching to the tanks too.

As you can see the engine and chassis have now been added to the shell, it really was not a problem at all fitting it all together, once the shell was in place I added the dashboard and windscreen. The screen itself has had the side windows removed as I will be adding these to the doors separately.

We are not too far away from completing this now, maybe one more update and then I will post completed pictures.

thanks again for staying tuned

Sean

final update - I think!

Ok guys, nearly there. As you can see the rear hood is on and working. I hinged it using two sections of alu rod and a pair of scratched hinges which attach to the two supports (kit parts D23 & D24) A few more decals are added and of course those beautiful yellow S27 wheels.

I have a little plumbing to complete on the engine, finish weathering/attach the exhausts, attach the doors and add the remaining decals and she's finished.

Hopefully you can just make out where and how the hinges work in this pic, sorry its not the best.

Having almost completed it I definately stand by what I said in that I think this has to be THE most beautiful rally car ever to grace the WRC

  This just gets better and better. I dont know anything about this car or much about the sport but I love this car in the game, Rally Fusion. It's a treat to see it come together in real life. Fantastic skills for sure.
