After it stops, after turning the key OFF but before turning ON again ... test for fuel pressure on the fuel rail. You don't need a gauge, just cover the tip of a small screwdriver with a rag and press the nipple in the Schrader valve. Gasoline should flood out for a brief period ... enough to wet the rag. BE CAREFUL!

well i got it fixed - there was no codes- it was weird - it was the idle air control valve - now it starts right up - i figured this out after i replaced the crankshaft position sensor- i am just happy to have it running again

Well a peculiarity of this engine is that it will run with the Crank pos sensor out but not start so you may have got it on the first pass.

An OBD could've given you the appropriate code which pinpoints the problem. I have 1999 Ranger 4.0 and I use the OBD II but earlier models I believe use the OBD I.
