Okay Ford guys, anyone know if anyone's ever made a 5 litre Mustang with a trunk?

only thing is an old All American Model kit, but those have been out of production for 10+ years. and go for $100 on EBAY, AFX Resin was supposed to make one, but its been TBA for at least three years.

Monogram made a 1:32 scale Notchback, its a 79-86 version though.

Ya, I was aware of the AAM one... wasn't expecting to find it :(

look up AFX Resin. They've had one. But it has been listed as unavailable. Give them a shout and see what they can do for you. I am planning a conversion, but there is no telling if or when I'll ever get around to it

Ya, but check out our current thread regarding AFX, Russ :banghead:

yep, saw that after I posted......I wish I had gotten around to the conversion long ago. It would have been worth the money to have someone lay up the mold for me

hehe... btw, the el camino paint turned out gorgeous (see WIP thread), it really does just get a bit foggy before you clearcoat it. Thanks for the help regardless

I'd say get a convertable, and a hatch and go to town. I don't think it'd be THAT difficult to do the conversion, and then you could pop out some resin transkits for the convertable to coupe conversion. I'd buy atleast one. the only thing I could see being a major pain would be doing the rear glass, but I think the glass from an S13 Silvia would be a good starting point.

I did the conversion in the late '80's as a replica of my 1:1 using the following:

Mustang GT convertible (Monkee's version, strange marble-blue plastic model)
83 Mustang CV (Monogram)
Mustang SVO (Monogram)
T-Bird pro-stock (Monogram)
Mustang GT (MPC)

The basic '83 Monogram convertible provided the body, the Monkeemobile some of the updated interior/fascia parts, the SVO the roof and taillights, the T-Bird gave it's rear window surround and glass. Not sure if the reissued '87 T-Bird Turbo has the same glass or not, but the earlier version fit nicely. I had to scratchbuild the C pillars, swap out engine compartments, yada yada. The resin kits by AAM had the incorrect '83 engine compartment, not sure if that's the same one AF/X used or not. I had to use the MPC kit at the time for the proper engine/interior since Monogram's Monkeemobile GT only had a new body, but the interior/everything else was straight from the '83.

Today I'd probably start w/the '93 Cobra and a '91 GT Convertible, both R/M kits, and scrounge up the T-bird for the rear glass and frame, and do a heroic job of getting the fascias/rub strips right, as they weren't done very well by R/M nor myself.

I think AAM may have also used the T-bird glass, but modified it at the top for a more correct roof than mine. Compare my black original that I built vs. the maroon resin kit:

Use superglue to fill the outer rear lenses on the Cobra or SVO taillights to make LX taillights.

Well, converting to a convertible is never a problem, that's easy--and besides, I can buy the Monkeymobile convertible kit. But I don't know about fabricating that trunk... I'll consider it. Thanks.

There's no trunk fabrication required, it's straight from the convertible. The whole body is from the convertible, the w/s frame was removed and the roof section (including the upper parts of the doors for strength, the cut was made underneath the lower side window trim) from the SVO (or Cobra in this case) is installed. Or you start w/the Cobra and cut in the convertible deck and do the window conversion.

that looks really close as far as the back glass is considered, but I thought the glass was a bit flatter, and didn't cut into the deck lid as much.

those are 2 very fine builds by the way. and, incidentally, I like the black one better, it has a much better fitment quality about it.

Oh!

Well what's the difference between a GT Convertible and an LX convertible then?

Google for pictures to see what I'm talking about.

GT's had air dams, side skirts, rear skirt, different tailights, different grille. LX's are much better looking IMHO w/o all that faux go-fast stuff on the GT's of that era. If you can find one of the Mongram '83 CV kits, that body is nearly perfect as a start as it doesn't have all the aero-crap of a GT. You'll still need the '93 Cobra and some scratchbuilding skills.

Fantastic. I didn't realize, but now looking at the pics, the basic body shape certainly is the same. Excellent.

John, If you get do the conversion. and are 100% satisfied with the results. I know someone who might be willing to make a mold..for a price. but the ROI would be huge I would imagine. Especially if you were able to offer a complete resin kit.....This is an extremely good idea...I can get all the reference that is needed. hmmmm...collaboration?

you can see in this picture that the curvature of the back glass is correct. I don't have any good shots of roofline where it meets the glass though

I'd certainly be willing to sell the resin kit, as long as the price isn't outrageous.

Hate to bring this back from the dead. But I plan on getting to this conversion ASAP. I'm going to hit local wal marts and see if I can find the convertible kit (will more than likely be the lowrider, as I saw that one recently) And HOPEFULLY the thunderbird turbo kit. quick question, does anyone thing that maybe the NASCAR Thunderbird's would be a suitable replacement, as they can be had for pennies on the dollar on the bay compared to some of the mustang/thunderbird kits. I may even be able to get a scrap body from one of the NASCAR builders. I hope to create a COMPLETE body for this thing, as well as trans kits for the old 4 eye cars. Any ideas/suggestions feel free!

the nascar 'birds have the glass support rods moulded into the glass, so if the size works you could sand them off, and possibly do a vacuum form on it, or possibly polish it out.

it shouldn't be that difficult to accomplish this. good luck! if you find one of those turbo birds, let me know where you got it, I'm needing one too.

I've seen quite a few of them on E-bay. I hope to pick up the lowrider kit tomorrow and start working on it. Plans as of now will be to offer a cobra nose, Gt, Lx, and 4 eye nose. I htink that only the GT tail lights will be offered, as most 'stang owners go with those anyway.

nice work on the notchback. I have one ? the LX notchback has a smaller side window than the LX hatchback. How did you accomplish this look?
I see were you used the trunk from a conv. the window from an 87 T-bird.
But what did you use for the side window? I like the black car better it seems more correct to the eye I don't now if its the pic.

Here is a hatchback.

here is the notchback see the difference in the windows.

On my black model I had to scratchbuild the rear quarter window and C pillar; I used most of the roof section from a Monogram SVO (the main body I used was an '83 convertible kit) which came along before Monogram did the '93 Cobra hatchback. I recessed the structure under the side glass, and used strip styrene to make the molding, and clear styrene or butyrate for the side glass. I attached the T-Bird rear windshield molding to the roof and trunk and used plastic sheet to fashion the C pillar to fill in between the rear glass surround and what I had left from the SVO. It wasn't terribly difficult since I had the 1:1 to refer to.

All well and good 5.0man, but AAM went out of business a few years ago... When and if that LX kit shows up on ebay (I've seen it ONCE) it went for over $80...
