Trunk Lid Pops

Here is my problem. My wife has a 97 SE and it seems that every time she puts the car in park the trunk lid pops and even sometimes when she puts it in gear it pops and she has to stop and get out and close it. Question is this.... Is this a solenoid or relay going bad and if so where is it?

It sounds like the trunk release relay may be flaky or there is a short or the body control module (BCM) is acting up. Reverse gives you the backup lights and the trunk release circuits share the same 12 volts from the B/U lamp fuse. The actual solenoid which is the trunk release at the trunk can't get the voltage to release unless the relay is energizing or some component is making the relay energize.

Forgot to mention that the shared 12 volts passes through the PARK/NEUTRAL safety switch aka Transmission Range Switch. The trunk release is only supposed to work in PARK. Inhibited in all other shifter positions.
