A Chevy newb with some questions.

I'm really considering a '96 Impala SS, but first I have some questions.
(This probably should have went into the Impala forum, but I figured there would be more engine-related knowledge floating around here, opposed to all the idiotic "rollin on 24's" crap.)
1. What is the difference between the LS1 and the LT1?
2. Can LS1 parts fit on the LT1?
3. While browsing through a Summit catalog, I saw alot of parts that said they were compatible with the Camaro/Firebird LT1. Would these parts (aside from the obvious like exhaust and intakes) fit on the Impala's LT1?
Thanks everybody, and remember, I'M NEW....so go easy on me.

LS1 parts will not fit on an LT1. The LT1's in the impala are the same as the f-bodys except for cylinder heads, and exhaust (i think).
LT1 is a gen 2 block with reverse flow cooling that was used from 92-97.
LS1 is a gen 3 block that shares nothing with the LT1 execpt its still a push rod v8. this engine was used from 97 to 04.
if you wanna know anything more specific just ask

You made the right choice in comming here with the questions. They will be promtly awnsered at least 3 times each in more detain than what you need, all with entertaining jokes and off topic ramblings.
1) The LS1 is aluminum (vs. the iron block LT1) and makes more power, especially at high rpms.
2) I think a few basic parts might be compatable, but for the most part no.
3) Engine parts are engine parts, be it for an Impalla, Camaro, Trans Am, or Vette, or whatever else they put the LT1s into. If you have a specific part in question, just ask and we can help.
Those are the basics, hope it was helpful.

Let's say for instance I want these Edelbrock heads,

Do you think they would fit? Also, does anyone know if an ECU power-programmer for a Camaro/Firebird LT1 would work with the Impala?
Thanks for answering my questions so quickly! You guys have been a big help!

Even though that probably puts out a rediculous amount of horsepower, I'm 95% positive I won't be FI'ing the SS (while the other 5% of me wants a low-boost supercharger). I want to keep the Impala around for a long time. I've wanted a '96 Impala SS for a LONG TIME, and now I've finally gotten a job to where I can afford one (and the gas for one).
Since I can't quite afford the fully restored 1970 Chevelle SS 454, I'll gladly take the Impala as an alternative.

with twin 67mm turbo it'll give you over 1,000bhp at the wheels.

I'd be happy with 300 at the wheels. All I want is a mildly-modded SS. Nothing insane.

with a few boltons (intake, tb, tb foil, 1LE elbow, headers, high flow cat, catback, underdrive pulleys, PCM tune), you can achieve that goal quite easily. there are also some free mods u can do.

Do you think Hooker long-tube headers and the Impala Borla exhaust would be too loud (the Borla exhaust has two mufflers and two resonators)?
If you think it would be a better idea to go with the shorties, what brand would you reconmmend? If I go with the shorty setup, I'd be pretty set on the Magnaflow high-flow cats and the Borla exhaust system.

long tubes are usually net you more low end torque. i dont think the headers with borla exhaust would be considered too loud. the this about borla is that the system should be adjustable with plates on the muffler. one of the plates allows you to totally bypass the muffler, which would make it a more radical sound. the cheapest header would be the pacesetter long tubes. the borla system will not be cheap because it is adjustable and it is totally made of stainless steal. magnaflow or flowmaster are good also.

Yeah, at Summit.com, the Borla system is close to $1000. But seeing as how I plan on keeping the car for a long time, It'll be a grand well invested.
Well it turns out that those Hooker long-tubes are actually shorties. My only option for long-tubes are these Heddman hedders.

Could anybody tell me if they would mate-up directly to the factory exhaust (by bypassing the cats altogether)?

most headers will run around there too but the cheapest are the pacesetter Long Tubes.
dazada

Pacesetter only has headers available for the Camaro/Firebird LT1. Even though it's the same engine, the Impala's exhaust might run differently. Even though the Heddman hedders are $450/pair, it would be a worthy investment.

Do you guys think the bank would even approve a loan for a 10-year old car? What I hopefully plan on doing is attempting to get a loan to pay for the Impala and pay off the Focus (my current car), then using the extra money that I get from selling the Focus to use on upgrades and repairs to the Impala (new gaskets, seals, etc.).

good thinking coming here -- I drive a caprice and usually browse the camaro forum here looking for engine performance type stuff -- I think it's the first time I've actually posted in it.
I don't know if the bank would approve a load for the impala ss. Usually, it would be too old, but prices seem to actually be going up on them.
btw, a great place for impala specific questions would be impalassforum.com (not to take anything away from this place -- it's great). There's plenty of people with impalas, caprices, and some of them even wagons in the 13's at the track, and a few even going 11's. I would read through there before you spend any money on mods on the impala -- they seem to know what works and what doesn't.
Hope that helps

I'm looking to spend no more than $14k for one. I've already registered on impalassforum.com, I just haven't posted.

No. There may not be emissions testing where you live, but throughout the US Federal emissions regulations are in place. and you can still get in trouble by not conforming to those regulations.
but if you don't give the cops a reason to check your car out, you'll most likely get away with it.

Well even though I really wanted an SS, I decided to go with a more practical (and cheaper) vehicle. A 2002 Chevy S10 LS. It's a standard cab, with a 4.3L V6 and a 5-speed. I'll probably just throw on an intake, headers, cat-back, ECU reprogram, Belltech suspension and some other minor things and be happy. At least I still got my Chevy.

why don't you just drop an LT1 in that S10. that 4.3 is pretty much a small block minus 2 cylinders. LT1 will drop right in using the stock mounts and everything.

LT1 is not the simplest s-series swap cause of the wiring involved. a TBI 350 would be simpler. The 96+ 4.3 is capable of 500+rwhp with the right parts.

the LT1/LS1 swap is possible but just more expensive because of the custom parts required. u will have to swap the stock t-5 manual trans for a t-56 6 speed as the t-5 can't handle over 300ft lbs of torque and i dont think it will fit the LS series engines. heres some pics of s-series LS1 swaps:
