Ok here goes my husband has an
87 SS Monte Calro
305engine 4brl carb.
121000 miles on her also.
Now here is the problems:
1. car was fine took it to store and when I came back out it would not run only if you keep foot on gas at all times.
While it did run this way it had a VERY STRONG smell of gas and it was burning it real fast also very thick black smoke out the tail pipes.
Also has a very bad miss and is running the battery right out after a few tries to start
NOW what have I done(he is not car smart):
1. Rebuilt carb
2. new throttle position sensor
3. new altenator
4. checked all plugs & wires
5. brought car up to top dead center on the #1 plug she did then run but really really badly.
6. turned the dis. cap to see if she was out of time and nothing seemed to change.
Like Isaid she is burning really really rich and the oil has a gas smelll to it makeing me think out of time or she jumped time any one that can help right now I would really appriciate it still owe the bank on this beast and its killing me that its been sitting for 3months now anscant figure iot out at all.
Thanks inadvance
Michele

Check the choke! I did an E4ME on a friend's 1984 Camaro last night, same carb and engine you have, and upon startup it did the exact same thing yours is doing. Turned out the choke was turned almost a half turn rich! Adjusted and now it runs like a dream. Not bad for 203,000 miles.

Any check engine lite on? Also how about the vacuum hose to the map sensor? Change that oil right away also!! Also check the coolant temp sensor for the proper resistance for the engine temp. You will need a resistance chart for the temp sensor, ( 2 wire type). I believe it is about 300 -500 ohms for a warmed up engine.

The Wedge-Block driver has a good idea, and you can check the CTS resistance against this chart:

However, on an E4ME installation, the enrichment due to cold coolant via the CTS and ECM is minimal. The choke setting is important, and those warning lights that Max asked about would include the CHOKE heater warning lamp. Make sure there is 12V at the choke heater element when the engine is running (alternator charging). While you're checking, make sure the choke plate is opened fully once the engine is warmed. Since you'll have the air cleaner removed and engine running for all this checking, see if any raw fuel is leaking from the bowl vent area on the top of the carb. That may indicate a sticking float ot damaged inlet valve.

Another possibility is leakage from the primary or secondary main jet wells on the underside of the carb. Since the carb was recently rebuilt, and if it was immersed in a caustic cleaner, the well plugs are suspect unless they were staked back into place and sealed with epoxy:

Great pics, did plenty of these carbs back and recently, slow set JB weld seems to hold better than the fast set. Couldn't find the chart last nite, I believe these cts specs are the same up thru the GM TBI also. Nice job!!

I think Blue's got the answer covered.
