4R70w Won't Shift out of 2nd

This is a 96 F150, 4wd, auto, 128k mi. that has been just falling apart in the driveway on me. I bought it with 108 k mi. about 2yrs. ago. This time it seems it does NOT want to shift out of 2nd gear. Going 50 mph it revs about 3k+ rpms. Sometimes going from 1st to 2nd seems to be a challenge.
I checked the trans fluid, added about 3/4 quart to top it off. Nothing on driveway, so where is it going? According to the door sticker it has Trans code: U, I guess that it a 4R70w trans. Does it have a vacuum, modulator? If so where the hey is it? Looked high/low...nothing.
No drain plug on it to drain the trans, WTF. I have no idea if the previous owner changed the fluid but I know he was big on Ford service. I was hoping this might be something I could do myself. I really like this truck but it seems it is turning into a money pit.
I will be away for about a week but any thoughts or ideas on what I could check when I get back would certainly be appreciated.
Oh, the Check Engine lite is NOT on but cleared the codes by pulling the PCM fuse yesterday, thinking maybe something there was causing it to misbehave (trying to be nice). Today I took it to get the codes read - printout said No Faults detected but DTC Pending codes =P1401. I believe that is EGR Sensor Circuit, High Voltage but I don't know what to check on that and don't think that would have anything to do with a shifting problem? Would it?
Thanks Gumby_CT

A bad speed sensor or mlps will cause the tranny to go into fault mode witch will cause it to stay in second gear. you will have to run the tranny cades.

I had the codes checked at Advanced - are there separate codes (or place to check) for the transmission? I haven't driven the truck since the last check when the Pending code P1401 mentioned was found.
Where do I find the mlps and speed sensor? What do I have to do to check them?
Thanks

its obd2 you just have to have the right code reader. you might try a tranny shop or the dealer

OK, the code still reads P1401. They didn't know where the mlps or speed sensor were either.
