Don't have an illustration off-hand, but the last one I had apart had two dimples - one on the cam gear and one on the crank gear.

You position them so the marks on the gears are closest together and in vertical alignment. Once you have the gears and chain on, it's usually recommended to rotate the crank twice (because it's a 2:1 ratio between crank and cam) and recheck that the marks line up again.
I can't see where to attach my drawing - maybe I don't have enough posts yet??

Sorry, I don't have any photos of timing gears - Just sprockets. GM got smart and stopped using gears many years ago. Some people haven't learned yet, and still insist on using gears.
