I'm looking at cars in the 2004+ range around $20k. I had my mind made up on an srt but now there isnt any at dealers around here so I started looking else where and the VW R32 caught my eye. Something about a 240hp V6 with a 6speed and AWD is intreguing so what do you guys think about the choices? Anyone have any other suggestions on cars?

I LOVE the VW R32. One of my favorites. Not to mention its going to gain value if you keep low miles and in good condition. Have you seen the interior? great quality. i would go w/ the R32 most deffinately.

r32 isn't legal in canada but I found this report on them. Pretty decent but I'd still take the evo or sti

Evos and stis are more than I can afford unless anyone can find a cheap one in southern to middle minnesota. I forgot to mention the car has to be a daily driver in Minnesota

Sorry but the r32 is not much of a manly car. What are you looking for in a car?

Well I am kind of lookin for a 4 door but a roomy 2 door will work to. I want something with some good numbers from the factory because I cant afford to mod it right away. I'd really like to stay in the forced induction area espically turbod but there arent many options and I'm not willing to get a wrx unless its an STi but I cant afford one of those :( I have about $20k to play with and so far my top choices are a 05 SRT-4, 04 R32, 06 Cobalt SS Supercharged, and a 01-04 IS300. All of which would be manuals and for colors I like black and blue. the srt4 gets points for being 4 doors having probably the most power on the list having a good warentee and being the easiest to mod. the r32 gets rare points and awd and a 6 speed are awsome to. The cobalt is a fun car with a blower but still looks like a cavi in a way but is quick none the less. The IS300 gets rare points 4 doors and the best luxery on the list. So I'm probably just going to go drive all of them and see what I like the best

VW for the gay. I most definately wouldnt get any VW reguardless of which one. If no SRT, I would say go S/C Cobalt, S2000, RX8, Evo, STi, Civic Si, or RSX.

I cant do a 2 seater, evos and stis are out of my range I'm not a big fan of hondas and to be honest I dont really like rx-8s. I think right now I'm torn between a srt and an IS300
Thor06
10-30-2006, 06:09 PM
I take that back, I wouldnt drive an Si either, but I think RSX's are pretty badass. I dont have a problem with IS 300's but I would take an SRT over it. I would just test drive both, see which one you like better and go with it. If you dont like one over the other, find the best deal between the two and pounce.

The come in either 5 speed auto or 5 speed manual. I dont know, after thinking about it I'm still leaning toward an srt mostly because its boosted and has pretty much everything I want in a car. Anything else starts getting harder to mod and more expensive. But we will see, I still want to test drive all the options if for nothing else to beat the hell out of them

RSX would be a decent car for our lovely minnesota weather. SRT-4 the cops will look at you alot more then they usually would. The best car i think you could get would be Evo ive found some in st paul for under 20k it being AWD it would be helpful in the winter but if you dont want to look hard and need a car right now the RSX would be one of the best options for minnesota. Easily modded and not alot of minnesotans know much about the car.

I have plenty of time to look, I'm in no hurry with winter coming up. I have a feeling that the only evo's that will be in my price range are private party with higher miles and I need to work with a dealer mostly because my parents and loans and such.

I have the car buying bug. The problem is I allready have 2 cars, I dont need 3.. I've been thinking about selling the gsx for a down payment on an NSX..
A girlfriend of mine has an R32. It's not as nice as you think. If you want a $20k 4 door sports car the 2002-2003 Infinity G35 is your best bet.. You might want to look at some of the 05 Volvo s40's. Those are 4 door, awd, turbo. I've been in a couple. I wouldn't have any reservations on buying one. The new Mazda line up is pretty impressive too, Just about everything they make is dirrect injection turbo charged. The Mazda 3 speed awd, 269 hp 4 door hach should be out in a few months.. What about the Saab's? Very impressive cars...
Don't buy an srt-4 for anything over 15k. R32's are hard to come by and you will be pressed to find one under 25k. Are you financing?
Good luck with the car shopping..

I actually found 3 r32s in my area and 2 for $22 or less. I dont think I want to go that route after thinking about it though. The mazda 3 is FWD and I'm not a big fan of the 4 door hatches, look to much like station wagons. The only G35s in my area in my price range have to many miles. S40s are nice cars but again when you get into my price range on the T5 they already have 40k+ miles. Saabs aren't bad either but I cant see myself driving one. I know I must sound really picky but this is my first new car and I dont want to settle for something, I'd rather wait and get exactly what I want. I've found a few 05 srts with less than 10k miles in the 18k range which is below blue book so I'd be happy doing that.

Mazdaspeed 6's are 2.3 AWD turbo and IIRC they are only like 22 brand new. I would go with one of those if they are cheap enough but I think the SRT is going to be the cheapest and easiest to mod for ya.
EDIT: My bad they are 28 new.

Mazdaspeed6's are AWD... huh, I talked to a guy here locally who had one, and we talked a/b my DSM and his car, and AWD Evo's and Sti's... but he never mentioned it being AWD...
interesting... I may see another car in my future (it's more a sleeper, not too many people locally know a/b them and I've only seen one cruisin' the streets and I know him, lol)

Yes they are AWD. Decent cars since they are coming in 6-8K less than Evo's and Sti's. I dont know how reliable they will be though.

I personally don't think that the NSX is worth the money. They are well designed cars(less the absence of HP and TQ) that handle like they are on rails. The design doesn't do much for me but they are one hell of a luxerious go cart.

Yeah, I agree on the NSX. If you are going to drop that much cash on a car, might as well get one with some power. However scottsee, there are two in my area I think if you want me to check them out.
I personally dont like GTP's. IIRC, GM used the same setup in GTP's and the S/C'd Buick Regals. My buddies and I raced one once, there was four of us in a gutted ~92 Civic hatch with a D16 and I/H/E and we beat him. He quit following us around squaking the tires at us after that. I wouldnt get one.
