Reverse lights work... sometimes

do you think it could be a loose connector somewhere along the line or something? where could the culperate be located..?

Need a little more info. Is shifter on colum in floor? Auto or manual what year?

I think the reverse switch on my 1993 C3500 is slightly out of adjustment.
If I "push" my automatic column shifter in one specific direction (I think "up"), my backup lights come on, but if I just throw it into reverse they often don't work.
Since your's sometimes work, maybe yours is also on the edge of the adjustment, like mine. Have you noticed if you can affect the problem like I can? If so, an adjustment of this switch (located somewhere on the shift linkage between the lever and the tranny) might do the trick.
I guess I need to fix mine, eh! :wink:

If it is like my '88 the back up light switch and neutral safety switch are built into one switch and is located on top of the column under the dash. I don't think they can be adjusted check you service manual I think you have to replace them. Some of the older models could be adjusted you put a drill bit through a hole then tightened up the screws but if I remember the new ones can't it has been a while since I changed one. The little cable that goes to your indicator that lets you knows what gear you are in is also in this area also.

Your answer prompted me to peer under the dash of my '93 One Ton, and what did I find? Lo and behold, the backup light switch is propped on top of the steering column right next to the firewall. And, even better, it IS adjustable. It will ratchet from side to side, and I was able to move mine a few clicks to the right and solve my backup light problem completely. I wish I had known a long time ago how easy that was to fix - I've been cursing the backup lights for a while. :smokin:

I am glad to help you I could not remember if they adjusted or not. Like I said it has been a while a here at the body shop we replaced some and adjusted some but on different models I could not remember which was which. Glad to be of help.

I'm glad this thread came up, I posted in the GMC area once on this very problem but got no useable responses, I have been cursing mine for some time as well, the brake lights only come on about halfway between reverse and park but not close enough to reverse to be in gear, I have a 91, I hope it is the same, I will be doing it tomorrow if so.
