Im thinking about getting my exhaust done. Do you guys think a new muffler, like a magnaflow or a flowmaster, would be a waste of money on a 4 cylinder engine? Im looking to free up a few ponies...im thinking im gonna get new headers and probably a high flow cat. Im just looking for some input. Thanks guys.

oh hell yea man, you can grab those pace setter headers + the high-flo cat from S&S Headers for $275 ... and a custom fabbed job w/ the muffler back... Because its the same setup i do believe for both 4cycl and v6 uhh.. the high-flo cat will not be a problem, but the muffler might need to be like something errr I wanna say something that will manage the output that ur car puts out but still keeps it flowin, I personally think a 80series flowmaster would be overkill...

Im gonna try and look at some magnaflow mufflers, I havent really heard any sounds of them on a GA but Im sure it'd be kinda ricy (which isnt always bad, *just got back from a car show/drift competition* :smokin: sh*t was badass)

Was lookin at some magnaflow, and the majority of the exhausts here, you would have to op for... the tips being on the right side rather than the left.. which isnt always bad I guess, unless you want dual out

I was thinkin maybeh this... for a single out in the available size...

Thing is, whatever the inlet would be, have it right next to the bumper, and the outlet further back towards the gas tank and a pipe coming out with whatever tip you decide on... Id option this for even myself if I had a 4cycl GA. Maybe 2.5 O/D but who knows :dunno:

Either way the mufler will only fit sideways(perpendicular to the car), doesnt matter if they are center or offset in-outs.

Magnaflows do sound thin and ricy.
You could do 2.5" pipe and duals, with headers & HF cat you'll hear and feel a differance :thumbsup:

I definitely dont want a ricy, fart can muffler sound. I dont expect to get rumble like a TA or Corvette or GTO. But id like a deeper note and would prefer dual tips. I just wasnt sure and owners of the 2.2 GA here in the forums is kinda thin. Would it be a waste to just do the muffler first? Then get headers and a cat later? Just a deeper exhaust note and more power would be great. Well your stock exhaust if far from 2.5" , so if you replaced the muffler first thier would hav to be adaptations made to the inlet pipe.
Which could be done with a reducer piece of pipe from the 2.5" inlet to the stock pipe size 1 7/8"(think thats the size).

IMO I'd just get a cat back from some local shop that way you'd get all your benifits at one time.

Should be able to get it done for around $300, if they want $400 or more I'd just order an SLP kit, they run about $450 :thumbsup:

lol stupid people terms, my bad... It would be easier to play around with a picture of the underside of a GA in the back....

I would still option for headers and high-flow cat before cat-back.... get the headers installed first... but soon after so you're not blowin chunks of ur cat out lol... Id do the high-flow cat & cat-back at the same time... it just might be easier for them to do it all at once

From what I have discovered, go with a header, then use the stock cat for a 6 cyl car, then use a gt intermediate pipe, then pick and choose your mufflers. You might have to modify the rear bumper a little to clear the exhaust, but if its done tastefully it looks good. Borla makes a good catback, and it has a nice sound to it, somewhat like a mellow rumble at idle.

Changing the header on the 4cyl is way easier then the V6.
That back manifold on the V6 is a big PITA to get to and out.

When I did the SE, I had the intake off, made getting to the back side a little easier but still a bear.

What skibum suggested would work also.
