The majority of the 4Runners have part-time 4WD. You shouldn't have it in 4WD on dry pavement. The drive train will bind. Only use the 4WD under poor traction conditions.

What Year is Your 4Runner?
If you have CV Joints in your front end it could be one of them gone on the Left Side.
If you have a solid axle in your front end it could be a U Joint or Universal on the left side of your axel.
Just my opinion.
Good Luck.

Whether IFS or solid axle, it's still a CV joint. Toyota doesn't use a U-joint in the front axles.
But I vote failing CV joint also.

Well it might not be a U joint but where I come from we called it a Universal in the front axle of a solid axle and a CV or Constant Velocity Joint in an IFS front end.
Sorry about the mix up.

As I said above, you are not supposed to use the vehicle in 4WD unless you are under poor traction conditions. Don't do it and you won't have the noise.
