Check Coolant

Ok so my dad has a 1998 ford escort wagon se. The Problem is when you turn on the car, after 5-10 minutes an icon appears on the dashboard. Its says check coolant.
What does that mean and how to fix it?:)

Top up your coolant in the reservoir and possibly change your radiator cap.
