4x4 problem 302 1993 Shift-on-Fly

last fall when i was testing to see if 4x4 for winter i had a problem where the motor had built up residue from the electromagnet brushes inside the motor.
so i hit it with a mag-light untill it worked..
when i would hit the 4x4 button i would hear relays or solenoids clicking but now i have no 4x4 agian, but nothing happens at all when i hit the 4x4 button.
i was going to go on alldata and print diagrams, follow wires with a multi meter checking for continuity but i thought i would check here first
anyone have an idea?

My first idea is that the mag-light didn't do anything wrong.

I don't know who around here could lead you into the motor..but most might follow you.

Edit-On second thought, there is also a vaccuum modulator for the unit, no? Just go over the whole Xfer Case before delving too deep in schematics, maybe.
