sunroof idea

I did a search and came up with lots of posts but no real definate answers. I was driving my crx the other day and all of a sudden on the highway my moonroof flew up. the left side had rusted and the mounting bolt for the front hold down bolt is no longer holding it down. My question is: the replacement from honda is over 300 bucks just for the panel. Has anyone successfully replaced it with lets say a....plexiglass panel? I was thinking about plexiglass cause it would be easy to cut, then I could transfer the guides from the rusted roof to the plexiglass and screw and epoxy the guides onto the plexiglass (I mean screw them, but put epoxy on everything to increase the strength). To me it sounds like a good idea, I could sand and paint the plexiglass and hopefully never have to worry about rust in that area again. Anyone ever successfully done this? If so what thickness of plexiglass could I get away with?

the problem with that is that it is not straight, mine did something simaliar the other day, the clip that holds it on the tracks broke and it flew up like a shark fin while doin about 90 mph

I noticed the stock panel has a slight contour to it..I wasn't sure whether that was just on the exterior portion of the panel for aesthetics or not...or whether the whole thing, including the peice the panel seals on are contoured...thats why I don't wanna charge blindly into doing this project without some guidance

i've never seen it done. usually people use sunroof plugs from plexi or C.F. then the rivet them in place.
