Have a 87 b2000 with 117k original
choke doesnt workl well, have to tap the gas a little to keep it running
once warm it runs fine but somtimes it will idle at 2k and wont go down unless i put the clutch in then it kicks down to 900 or so were i usually have it
any help
hows the carb related to the trans?
will do this every time

The power wire on the side of the choke should run down and plug into the back of the alternator. Many times it gets disconnected and hooked back into the wrong place, like into the PTC heater plate causing both of them not to work, lol. Also when cold the choke won't enguage unless you hit the petal once (some people my age have problems with that, lol).

Proper procedure for cold starting a 2000/2200 equipped with carb is to depress accelerator about 1/2 way which in theory "sets" the choke in closed position then crank engine.First closed position on chke usually has engine running at 1500-1800 rpm. When engine reaches about 160 degees, choke steps down to about 1000-1200 rpm. At normal op temp of 180 degrees ,choke fully opens. This assumes a properly tuned engine,a MAzda 160/180 2 stage thermostat, and a carb that works as it should. Since the carbs on these engines are generally described by owners in one syllable,Anglo-Saxon expletives (lol),anything else is possible and probable.BJ

Then my next suggestion would be to take the aircleaner off and clean the exterior of the carb with carb cleaner to eliminate varnish or gease buildup that might be impeding choke performance. Then crank truck, have someone sit in cab with foot on accel at about 1500 rpm and spray carb cleaner down the carb throat until clean. Then see if it works better.BJ
