You talking brand new short block? I could see a rebuild of that engine exceeding the cost of a short block, at least built up nicely, granted you found a decent deal on one. I had a 'knock', but it was really my valve train. I had a cracked head which probably wore the bearings down, which caused my oil pressure to drop (oh yeah, it was low), which caused the lifters to be improperly oiled.
However, you can get a 2.9L from the junk yard for fairly cheap. I like to rebuild myself, I've had some bad experiences with other's work and junk yard parts. E-Bay has a lot of parts for pretty cheap, I've had pretty good luck if you know what you're looking for. You would be suprised what you can find on google as well.

Unless you are an expert mechanic, I'd buy another vehicle. However, if you just to tinker with the vehicle (time and money are no object) then have at it.
