Ferrari 512S

Hi all... i got this kit. A Ferrari 512S , was thinking of building it. But then again i feel like selling it off as i dont think i can build this well enough. The kit is pretty much simple but yet detailed. The hood can be opened to reveal a full detailed engine. The decals on the car are still good and the kit condition is fully new other then ageing on the box.

So if i were to build this kit.. maybe someone could provide me with reference pictures and then ill start building it up with as much detail as i possibly can!

If you are looking for pics of the engine, I cannot help you there. I would however recommend looking at the new MFH instructions for their 512S Spyder. A lot of detail is similar and it shows the right wiring. You can find it here.

I have always believed that if you take your time and do the right research, you can build almost any kit. The worse that can happen is that you learn something while buildig it.

As you probably know it's an old Heller kit. The detail is very good and parts fit together quite well. It does indeed build up very nicely. The decals are for the Daytona version, so if you want a Le Mans car you'll have to find some elsewhere. Motor Racing Models magazine did an article way back when on this kit and building the yellow Ecurie Franco car from Le Mans.

... I built the same kit 30 years ago. It was fun to build and the level of detail is quite impressive counting the age of the kit.

I cut the rear hood at both sides and placed scratchbuilt louvres there, as the prototype of the car had.

Forgive my intellegence on the following question. What is the difference between a 512 "M" and "S"? I have lots of engine pics for the "M".

Ferrari built 25 512S's for the 1970 World Sportscar racing and 512M is basically an updated version of 512S for 1971 season. Bodywork was mostly rervised and engine updated (40hp up iirc). Weight was also significantly lower.

The reason why it is so hard to find reference pics for 512S is that Ferrari updated most of 512S's to the M specs in 1970.

Almost forgot:
Build that kit, that is what it is meant for. Just be careful with the tubular rear subframe, it can be a bit challengin.

In my opinion, you should build the 512S - it is the more beutiful car. Even if the 512M got faster and more reliable. Look at this:

The SUNOCO 512M was prepared by Kirk F. White & Roger Penske for the 24 Hours of Daytona 1971 and was in much better shape than the factory cars. Traco did the rebuild of the engine.

The model is much harder to find if you don't want to spend $ 400 + for a resin model. I'm still looking ...

Fisher models does a very nice 512S spyder plus the long tail "coda lunga" cars from 1970 Le Mans. The long tail 512S is the best looking IMHO. He also has several variants of the 512M including the Sunoco car. They are curbside resin kits and are extremely nice to build.

I was unfortunately missing to mention that I'm into 1/12 models now. I know that Fisher is doing very nice kits but I'm trying to get my favourite cars of the seventies in 1/12.

That was the reason for my estimate
