There should be a small blue tag on top of the radiator support between the headlight and radiator cap, this is the engine ID tag. If this is missing, there is a 1-1/2" square on the front of the engine block right next to the transmission that has the engine code on it. If all else fails, what model is your car and where are you located? For example, HF, DX or SI, and US, Canada or Europe.

It is a 85 crx si and i am located in California 80 miles east of L.A. I had founda stamp on the block right next to the altrnator FC0434. I look where you said to look and i found the tag it reads EW3-2001984. what if the previous owner removed the engine before. Would the numbers still be the same. THANKS YOU BEEN LOTS OF HELP. COULD I HIT YOU UP IN THE FUTURE.

It's an EW3 motor.

This was the predecessor to the D-series motors. In '87 the motor designation was changed from EW to D but the design of the motor did not change. The 88+ motors were redesigned and designated as D15## and D16##, and share very few parts with the EW motors. The "D" is the family of motor design, the two numbers to follow are the size of the motor in liters, and the last two letters designate motor revisions.
