lt1 vs. lt4 vs. ls1

What is the difference between the lt4 and the lt1, and how does an lt4 stack up to a ls1?

LT4 has a different intake manifold, heads, cam profile, comp ratio, I think it has 4 bolt-mains, and a few other smaller things. From GM, it was rated at 330 horses. But that number can easily be persuaded up with bolt-ons.

A LT1 Makes between 275 - 305 Horse from the factory. The LT4 330 - 340 and the LS1 around 345 for the 00 - 02 model and around 320 - 330 for the earlier models. Since RPM's and top end come into play, the redline on LS1's is 6K, LT1 is 5700 and LT4 is 6300.

LT1 is the cheapest of the bunch and the LT4 would be hard to come by but they use the same exact block as the standard LT1 vettes, so with the heads and intake manifold any LT1 has the potential to be a LT4 however cost wise you could see roughly 20 - 30% more power by going to the after market for rockers and cam and just porting your stock heads which would create better flow numbers than stock LT4 heads.

LS1's are not as expensive in salvage yards right now but on ebay and for crate engines the prices are pretty insane.

ah, cool beans. So what would happen if someine got ahold of some lt4 heads and ported/ polished them?

Ported LT4's flow some real nice numbers but unfortunetly ever since the LT4 intake got discontinued the prices have got pretty crazy. I would go to the aftermarket before LT4 if I was seeking the most efficient heads for a nice price.
