Infamous Intake Leak

Hi all. I posted this in the Monte Carlo forum but thought I would run it past all of you since it is not a model specific problem. My 2000 Monte Carlo with a 3.4L has leaking intake gaskets. It has 70K on it. I was wondering whether anyone here has had any luck with getting Chevrolet to pop for any part of the replacement cost since this is an inherant defect in the GM line.

I went through this same thing with the same engine on a 2002 Malibu. It was my friend's car, not mine, but basically the deal is that we wound up having to replace the gaskets ourselves. It wasn't a huge deal, one evening of work, but nonetheless we did it. I do believe that GM should cover this, considering it is a design defect, but they haven't yet to my knowledge, which might be less than nothing on this subject.

I heard in Canada the gov't is applying some pressure in that direction.

I heard in Canada the gov't is applying some pressure in that direction.Correct. Canada has a class action lawsuit going against GM. I think I will call Chevrolet customer service and see what they say. I talked to a friend that heard that they were helping some customers if they complained loud enough.

I have had two friends that have had gasket problems with those cars. They also have had blown head gaskets. The mechanic told them that those aluminum engines would probably blow a head gasket every 50k miles. And they got no help from GM on it either. They deny it's thier problem.

Dang! 50K on head gaskets?! I've got 210K on mine. I just had to replace my intake gaskets a few weeks ago, though.

I agree. 50k on the head gaskets is going a little overboard. I replaced my intake gaskets for the first and last time at 167,000 miles. I now have almost 190,000 on this 1998 3.1l and have not had any other problems.
