2004 grand prix won't start

My 2004 grand prix has 50800 miles and yesterday I tried to turn my car on and it did not start. All it did was make a loud annoying ticking sound every time I turned the key. The dic said charging system failure. Does this mean my alternator is dead or is it something else?

Sounds like it but get the battery to include alternator tested to make sure both are good. It doesn't help if the battery is not holding a charge.
