97 SSEI Tranny shift problems

Hello all, I am new here and am hoping someone here can help. I have a '97 SSEi when driving will shift into neutral instead of hitting the next gear. Tranny doesnt actually slip ( as far as I can tell ), it just shifts from a gear into nothing. I also noticed that on the center console that the buttons for normal shift & performance shift are both lit up and pushing either one does not shut off the other light. Maybe a computer issue??? I would appreciate any info before I pull the tranny and replace and possibly have same problem. This car has 122,000 miles, I bought from original owner, and wouldnt expect the tranny to be gone yet, as I have a 97 SE with 156,000 miles on it and it runs and drives great. Thanks for any info! Bob

Welcome to AF, this should be scanned on trans function scanner to check for codes and to confirm shift solenoid operation, I assume the the fluid is full and not burnt. Also check the large connector on the trans for proper fit and possible corrosion.

No gears missing, if tranny is shifted manually, it will catch all gears, but always ends up in neutral

Not sure, I only bought it a few weeks ago as a winter project. I have only driven the car about 2 miles since I got it home.
