1999 Altima with 92,000 miles - What Needs Maintenance ?

I have a 1999 Altima GLE that I bought used at 85,000 miles 2 years ago. So I'm basically only driving about 6,000 miles per year. I don't have much in terms of service records; I know it has a fairly new battery and the brakes are good, but what other stuff should I be concerned about replacing ? When do you usually need a new water pump ? I understand this car has a timing chain and not a timing belt,,,does this timing chain ever need replacing ?

If I replace the water pump are there other things I should replace at the same time ? Also what is your thought about getting work done on cars ? Should it be done at the dealership or local mechanic ?

Appreciate the advice,,,as you can tell I'm not very mechanical :)

Cooling system is the most important especially since your temp gauge is not reading normal. Waterpumps should be replaced when they start leaking from the weep hole under the pulley. Your timing chain should not ever need to be replaced. The dealer is usually the most expensive. There are good techs and plenty that are still learning. I think it is better to find an independent shop with a good tech that you like.

Well since you have no matinées history with the vech , i would recommend starting fresh , so you know where your at.

Oil change
Trans Service / Flush if available
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Plat Plugs
Coolant Service
have Brakes checked and rears adjusted and cleaned
Tire rotation and balance, Best tires on the front

Those are some of the thinks i would recommend so your up to speed on what your car needs.

I am reading information that a transmission flush should not be done on a car with 90,000+ miles. What's the typical cutoff mileage for doing a transmission flush ?

Over 100k i don't recommend it. It really depends on the condition of the Fluid.
