Guys and Gals...I want to thank you one more time for your help on this. It really wasn't that difficult at all. The method of jacking up the whole control arm and placing a socket inbetween then dropping the jack worked the first try!!! I would have been done 1.5 hours sooner if advanced auto would have given me the correct spline axle...I had asked them to hold a 26 spline and they conveiniently gave me the 23 spline:banghead: But all is well and no more clicking coming from his car.

The price the auto shop quoted him at ($150) per side.

The price for supplies and me to do it ($61) per side...I didn't want to charge him b/c I figured it would be more of a learning experience for me since this was my first time at it!:grinyes: It will come in handy if my axles go out in my wagon!

You peeps are the best! Thanks a million!

Or any other honda or acura for that matter. Same process.

If I can ask one more thing if you here....Could someone explain where to fill up the trans(gear) oil at? I think it might be the square bold at the bottom of the tranny but I'm not sure...about a pint leaked out and want to make sure it's filled up so it don't screw his tranny up.

Thanks!

There is a plug on the side of the transmission, I believe its a 17mm, its conventially inbetween the transmission and the frame rail, so you will need a long flexible funnel to fill it up. Just pop the plug out, stick a finger in there and see if you can fill any fluid, if not, start adding some till it starts pouring out and your good.

Ill try to go get some pics of it real quick if there isn't too much dirt/mud on my race car.

Here: Not a good picture, just grabbed it real quick.

I was also wrong exactly where it was, I was thinking of another one I was having problems with.

Yep, same thing happened to me when autozone gave me the wrong axle. But whatever, i tricked them into believing i bought both an STD drivers axle and a dx/si one. Now i get lifetime waranties on both, even though i only bought one. :evillol:

BTW, be careful with that 17mm bolt. Its probably on there tight and strips easily. Use a box-end wrench and find someway to add a bunch of torque. I jacked the car up real high and added a cheater bar to my wrench. Fill tranny up with a long funnel and use either Honda MTF or just pour in a little 10w-30 or 40 motor oil if you dont wanna pay 6 bucks for a quart of honda MTF.

You can also fill throug the speedo drive. Just remove the 10mm and pour. I like this method better because you can add oil with the car on the ground, and you won't make a mess either.

Yea, that always works too. I haven't ever had a problem with the fill plug, but doesn't mean it can't be a bitch. I filled mine up without ever getting it off the ground either, but the speedo cable is a pretty easy method.

Where's this speedo cable at...never heard of this b4? I had a hell of a time getting the fill plug off...so I gave up:banghead: . This way sounds alot easier!

Thanks

its the cable that is right next to your rear motor mount on the top of the tranny. youll see it held in place by a little white plastic piece.

Or you can take the starter off and there should be a bolt (17mm?) right under it where you can fill the tranny. Also, i would not recommend trying to fill the tranny without taking off the fill bolt, unless your sure EXACTLY how much fluid spilled out when changing the axle. The fill bolt is like a dipstick for oil, there shouldnt be any more oil than the bottom of the plug.

*If you overfill your tranny, you can bust the tranny casing seal (i speak from experience) and have an annoying tranny leak. So IMO get that fill bolt openned before trying to add more fluid into your tranny.

Hmm.. the stock fill bolt on my friend's LX is a square recessed bolt.. you just stick a 1/2" drive ratchet into it, and back it out. Mebbe it's been changed?

I 2nd the "don't overfill your trans"

Had it happen too... on the side of the road.. and tranny blew out as soon as the turbo spooled.. so I had to walk 30 miles, b/c in pa, we've all got something better to do than pick up stranded ppl... but that was a ford escort... so it's not a big loss :P

That's never been the fill location.

Yea i think the guy was talking about the drain spot. The drain plug just fits a 3/8 ratchet, its under the fill spot, easy to bust open.

um, yea, actually, it was the fill location on this particular one, I've had to use it several times.. the lower fits a 3/8" head, and the upper fits a 1/2" ratchet head. Like I said before, maybe it was an aftermarket thing.. it's only a NPT thread, you could get one from any hardware store..

Exactly. I'd like to see someone fill through the lower bolt. The fluid would just pour out as soon as you poured it in....lol.

mmk.. maybe you didn't understand... THE BOLT MIGHT HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH ANOTHER FROM THE HARDWARE STORE..

BOTH OF THE BOLTS HAVE A RATCHET-TYPE SQUARE HEAD ON THEM, ONE IS 1/2" RECESS, THE OTHER IS 3/8"

Thank you and have a nice day. :)

on a side note, I saw somewhere (have to look for it again) where a company makes (or it's just available b/c of something else and it works) a bolt for the fill location that has a clear plastic piece in the middle of it, so if you wanted to fill the trans through the speedo cable, you could just install one of those, and make sure you're not overfilling it, as you could just stop when you see the fluid...

Just thought I would note that.

I think there is another bolt on the bigger part of the casing that is a 1/2" recessed, I had it work itself loose somehow on my race car. It up and to the right of the drain plug.

Ok and what does that fact that one person out of a billion people who drive Hondas had a unique fill bolt that opens up with a 1/2" ratchet have to do with helping this guy? The point of this thread was to help and answer jimmy86's original question about how to refill his tranny after changing his axle. The fact that your friend has a unique fill bolt is meaningless to jimmy86 and most other people wanting to learn the procedure for changing their axle.

Also dont bash on bambam about not understanding what you originally said. The pictures and knowledge he gave out was 100X more valuable and informative than what you had to say. All we were trying to do was help this guy with his original problem not showcase about some special bolt. All i can say is just chill out if you see we didnt understand your story.

heh, it started out as a question that I posted, actually... I asked if "Mebbe it's been changed?" B/C I didn't know. I"ve never seen another one like it, so I assumed, but it's always better to be informed.

In any event, sorry for getting jumpy about it, hadn't slept in like 2 days when I read the post lol

Has anyone else seen the plastic "bolt" thing that I was talking about? I"ve only seen it on a few vehicles, seems like a decent idea, not that I have a use for it.
