Tamiya Williams FW24 Normal Build

Hello
This will be my first post and builds on this forum. As their have been a few other Williams FW24 builds this one will not be as detailed as some and be mostly Box stock, I will use Studio 27 detail set and Decals.
I will try to show some areas of the build that others have left out if I can as being a average modeler, I was looking for all info on some of these builds I looked at. I hope this will help someone who is newer to building
The Monocoque was painted white first, wet sanded with 1200. Masked and the TS51 sprayed. I let it set for 7 days then wet sanded
and sprayed Tamiya Clear and then let set again. I will add decals and then spray Mr Hobby Clear as I hear it is better over decals.
The Rear Cowling has same steps except in this photo the clear has not been sprayed yet

All Parts are painted per Tamiya instuctions. I am using SMS Carbon Fiber blank sheets and Templete set
Their are lot's of parts that the templete set does not cover. I am using Micro set and Solvaset on the complex areas.
For Studio 27 decals I will use Micro Set and micro Sol as they are not as agressive and seem to work great with the decals.
If I make another one of these kits I would leave part A30 and the Fuel covers off as after gluing, primer and paint they blend in way to much. I used Liquid cement to join halves and other pieces that make up the monocoque and I did not need any filler at all

Looks clean... but i do think this kit deserves detailing ... !

Yes it does, but as my time is limited and I want to finish the kit in this lifetime I think the amount of detailing for me will be fine. I have 20 other great kits that also need detailing. I am adding all the Carbon Fiber and the Studio 27 upgrade and this still will take quite a bit of time. I plan on finishing this kit in November. So this Diary is about finishing the kit not making a masterpiece that we do not see the end of. I just do not have the time to go further

Hi Radfilm,
Welcome to the forum from me too. Nice work so far. Looking forward to seeing more from you. I had problems with a step in my paint between the white and the blue, which you think is okay until you apply the silver decal and then you realise that the silver decals accentuate the step. Also, getting the Allianz transfer (that is part on the monocoque and part on the cowling) to align is one almight PITA. Oh, and remember that the rear cowling is black where the exhausts exit.
All the best,
BillyPee

Thanks Billypee
I will be adding a update soon. I have been doing all the Carbon Fiber decals for days. What I did about the steps betwwen the blue and white paint was shot the white, wetsanded, painted the blue, wetsanded and sprayed Tamiya Clear. It seems to be quite flat with the clear build up.
I should have the decals on tonight and will update

Sounds like the way to do it. I didn't sand or clear over the top but that is what I am doing on the Jordan 191. I'm still concerned that the decals will magnify the step tho, but I hope that clearing over the top afterward and getting a smooth surface will work. Do you plan to use wax or polish before applying the clear or will that prevent the clear from bonding properly?
Thanks, BillyPee

Hello
Here is a new update. I installed the seat with little problems, I glued the dashboard/firewall after seat was in monocoque.
I also added sidepods. Make sure before you paint and decal you test fit the peices as they did not fit good for me. Paint just made it worse but I made them fit. It would have been better if I spent some time in the primer stage really test fitting.
I will polish the paint when I am near completion

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/3339/img4591yc0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I also painted the Flat Black on the exhaust area on the rear cowl. I need to do some cleanup beacuse of slight bleed. Next I will paint the inside of the cowl.
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/6227/img4586jr5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
This model take alot of time due to decaling and waiting for paint to dry but I will finish it soon.:banghead:
Thanks for looking.

Great work all round.
I remember problems with the fitment too... the undertray and the monocoque do not make happy partners... but, like you, I was guilty of not spending the time checking fitment and the primer stage.

Hello All
I have been able to work on the Willaims over the holidays quite a bit.
I added the decals to the Cowl, started and finished the front steering, suspension and brakes.
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/975/img5374ne5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I would make sure you put the front suspension uprights in before you add steering and brakes as it in the same step on the directions but will only work with the steering off. I learned the hard way. But everything is fine.
I also added all the barge boards.
http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/7050/img5375cq0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The best way for me to add these was use fast drying red Hot Stuff on one end and accelerator on the other part. This seemed to work the best way to make them sit the correct way.

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3317/img5382tx1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I also added the radiators and exhaust pipes, painted with Alcad
http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/649/img5383bd5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I have some touch up areas I need to do with the Carbon Fiber decals and paint and then soon I will polish the paint.
