Smell

Should I be concerned about a rotten egg smell coming from my exhaust? i heard its from the catalytic, but wasn't told if it means its bad or not. I know these I6 engines r suppose to have some tork but it doesn't seem to have a whole lot when i stomp on it from a dead stop. around 2000 rpm's it seems little more torkier. i'm just wonderin' if maybe the cat is getting bad and its robbing my power. its an '02 4wd w/55000 mi. highway and city mi.

Sulphur smell from the exhaust is common during hard acceleration or rich fuel mixture conditions. Some gasolines can cause it more than others. I've gotten it with all my trucks/SUV's. I wouldn't sweat it unless it's accompanied by performance of economy concerns. The slow take-off thing? That's GM's powertrain control software and our throttle by wire setup. If you floor the go pedal from a stop, the software will not allow the throttle to go wide open (at low speed and RPM) like it would with a cable actuated throttle.

oh, ok. ya i notice it has no problem passing on the highway, probably the rpms are higher so it allows thew throttle to immediatley open up. I didn't realize that the throttle was controlled in that matter. i thought it was just cables opening and closing the throttle. is there a way to program it to open up from dead stop?

You can purchase 'modified' PCM's or have your PCM reprogrammed. They call them "Tunes". Keep in mind, doing so takes your truck out of the envelope for which it was designed. Not to say your truck will instantly self-destruct with modified software, it's just that taking it out of stock makes them more difficult to fix should they need it. (just my honest opinion).
