Got Smoke - Need help

Question - I installed amp and prepackaged subwoofers in my truck the other day. Everything has been great. Until today... I pull in the driveway, turn the stereo way down and turn the truck off. Then thump(from the subs) and smoke! I let the smoke clear out and things cool down. Turned the ignition to ACC and everything works fine. Why we were driving my kid had turned the bass boost on then offand it looked like he didn't have the switch all the way off. Could that cause it? Is there anything I sould check????????

did you go through a break in period with them?

bass boost just adds a little (or a lot) to the bass output

There isnt really a break in period, You only need to break the suspension in other than that the sub can handle whatever the power rating is right out of the box.

Smoke came from the ports on the box - it's a bandpass. I figured maybe the switch notbeing fully seated on either setting caused a small surge. I haven't pulled it apart yet.

bandpass enclosures are notorious for blowing speakers because you cannot actually hear the speaker itself - so you can't hear when it's distorting badly. The box is quite efficient but remember, if you play notes below the lower tuning frequency the sub is basically unload - like playing it in free air. In that case, you could destroy it with only a few watts

The strange thing is that it all still works and sounds good. It was kind of wierd, like the system burped. I'll know more when I tear it down.

And sends a very dirty signal to the subs.
Not a good thing to use.

???? how do figure ? It can overload the input of the amp IF it's misused, but in and of itself it does not "dirty" the signal.
