Straight pipe

How much of a difference would it make if i was to straight pipe my 1998 v6 malibu ?

Straight pipe could actually hurt engine performance. You need a little back pressure in the exhaust.

so are you suggesting that i don't do it, if so what can i do to the exhaust system for a little more speed ?

you can get high flow catalytic converts and after market exhaust systems. Probably a cold air system might help a little, it replaces your air box with a slightly longer intake to the throttle body,. Then uses a K and N type air filter on the other end. You probably will see a very slight horsepower / miles per gallon increase.

Agree'd. My best bang for the buck was a FWI, larger TB and free'er flowing exhaust.

i have a cold air intake with the k&n filter but i was just wondering about taking the muffler out and straight piping it. It's not something major that i have to have done i was just wondering about it because a friend of mine brought a crown victoria and it was straight pipe and it runs like a bat out of hell

A crown vic is going to smoke a malibu, straight pipe or not, so that's not really a good comparison. I'm assuming you still have the stock catalytic converter installed? Deleting the stock muffler isn't going to make any difference in power or fuel mileage. The best way to do it would be a high-flow cat, and an aftermarket cat-back system.

Who was comparing a malibu and a crown vic, i said that i know a guy that has his crown straight pipe. Any body with common sense knows that a malibu can't run with a crown. Thank you for the insight.

Well, I was just saying your used to a malibu, and a Vic will run anyway, but I see your point.

taking the muffler out and straight piping it. If you take the cat out, what about inspection time ? also your post 02 sensor. ?
larger TB where do you go to get those, do you also have to use a cold air pr aftermarket intake / filter ?
... another way to gain extra HP which applied more when I had Motorcycles is for the driver to lose 40 lbs :grinyes: :grinyes:

I've got a 3100 Monte Carlo, with a 3400 top-end.

O.K so if u had about 300 to spend what would you do to a malibu for speed .....Corning ?

Well, I got a ~$100 high-flow cat, and a ~$100 Delta 40 series Flowmaster, and went from the manifold collector all the way back with 2 and a 1/2" pipe. Labor and parts was ~$250-$275. I don't have a dyno at the moment(one on the way) but I'll test stock vs. my setup and see the gains. If I had to guess, I'd say I free'd up around 10hp.

kewl,, what about your MAF , MAP, ECT and EGR, did you have to mod the wiring harness ? does it make the motor any taller or is it the same ?

Isn't the 40 series flowmaster kinda loud ?

for the MAF i have the PRO M maf caliberated for the CAI.
i also want to get the cat back from pacesetter exhaust. its for the grand am but it fits with minor mods.
next on the list is MMS stage 2 cam and heads

Hmm, didn't know this thread was still going.. I'll take a set of those sweet looking headers, however
kewl,, what about your MAF , MAP, ECT and EGR, did you have to mod the wiring harness ? does it make the motor any taller or is it the same ?
Everything was the same as the 3100 intake, provided you use the right year model. The MAF stays in the intake tube, and the MAP, ECT and EGR all bolted to the stock locations.
Isn't the 40 series flowmaster kinda loud ?
Sorta, the delta 40 isn't too bad. I have it in the stock location with a turn-down and it's pretty tame cruising, and at WTFO, I can still hear my Ractive air filter. I'm going to try a diff. muffler soon. Either the flowmaster hushpower, magnaflow or the holley afterburner..

I took off the resinator and cat on my car, and added a deltaflow flowmaster exhaust. My Malibu aounds like a v8 Muscle Car but it doesnt have that much power to it. I then decided to add on a Magnaflow hi-flow cat, and I got a lot of the power back, since it build up more pressure. Dont plan on removing ur cat if you dont know anyone who will pass ur emmissions, because it doesnt pass at all
