School bans tag, other recess games (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061018/ap_on_fe_st/playground_tag_ban_4)

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Tag, you're out! Officials at an elementary school south of Boston have banned kids from playing tag, touch football and any other unsupervised chase game during recess for fear they'll get hurt and hold the school liable.

Recess is "a time when accidents can happen," said Willett Elementary School Principal Gaylene Heppe, who approved the ban.

While there is no districtwide ban on contact sports during recess, local rules have been cropping up. Several school administrators around Attleboro, a city of about 45,000 residents, took aim at dodgeball a few years ago, saying it was exclusionary and dangerous.

Elementary schools in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Spokane, Wash., also recently banned tag during recess. A suburban Charleston, S.C., school outlawed all unsupervised contact sports.

"I think that it's unfortunate that kids' lives are micromanaged and there are social skills they'll never develop on their own," said Debbie Laferriere, who has two children at Willett, about 40 miles south of Boston. "Playing tag is just part of being a kid."

Another Willett parent, Celeste D'Elia, said her son feels safer because of the rule. "I've witnessed enough near collisions," she said.

Student: Professor how did America fall?
Professor: That's a good question. Well the country was taken over by a bunch of fucking pussies.
Student: Pussies?
Professor: Yes pussies. These people were shitheads who had nothing better to do than fuck things up for everybody else.

Schools should outlaw books too, I've gotten too many papercuts from my textbooks. Also pencils too, they can stab people. And lets just let one kid in the hallways at a time, that way they wont run into eachother there.

So wait, kids can't play sports because it's dangerous, and they can't eat in school anymore because they'll get fat.:screwy: Im so glad I went to grade school in the 90's.

Here's another article: http://dwb.sacbee.com/content/news/story/10469970p-11389340c.html

And this is probably the most pathetic thing I've ever heard:
At Natomas Park, students can only toss and catch a football - tackling or blocking isn't permitted. But the no-contact rule applies beyond the grade-school gridiron.

During lunch recess one recent afternoon, yard supervisor Janice Hudson spotted a first-grader pushing a girl on the swing.

"Do not push," Hudson told the student. "Let her push herself, please."

wow that sucks, although i know i'd be one of the kids who had to spend time "against the wall" every recess for playing tag or something. it's retarded, dodgeball isn't dangerous, sure it might hurt a bit but these kids aren't nearly strong enough to inflict any kind of serious damage. and what about tag and other "contact sports"? what can a kid do other than fall down and scrape his knee or run into something, it's fucking stupid.

honestly, my kids are going to be punished with the belt, if they do something wrong, they have to walk over to the hanger and bring me my belt. either that or i'll send them into the forest to choose their stick, if it's too small ill just send them back in until they find a big enough stick.

i almost agree with you. i don't think i'll homeschool them because they need contact with other kids and school is one of the best ways to do that. I'll probably tutor them if they're anything like me, i got extremely bored in grade school because it was just too damn easy and high school wasn't much different, hell first year engineering isn't all that hard. but if they're anything like me they'll need it and they'll enjoy it, not only that but they should develope better study habits, do better in school, be more intelligent, get scholarships and cost me less money.

besides, they haven't done this in canada, let's just hope it stays that way until my kids are done.

This shits fucking retarded. I love how everyone says kids need excercise, but then the PC crowd steps in and says kids can be injured doing X, or may have their feelings hurt.

If I'm gonna be living in a country where everyone grows up to be fucking pussies. I'm gonna teach my kid to be a bully.

am i making the right choice by moving? i mean, the way things are going over there my potential future kids won't even be able to play games in the playground. that's stupid.

it's different here, if your kid gets hurt at school that's pretty much it, people don't sue the school because you got hurt there, it's not the school's fault if some other kid pushes your child over and they get hurt.

i remember when i was at school and i was like 7 or 8, we had some huge climbing frame thing, with like a "hut" at the top, it was about 12ft tall at the top. (it did have that soft rubber asphalt around it though) and some kid got pushed off and broke his arm, there was no law suit, the other kid got in shit and the injured one was back a week later with a cast.

what is our country coming to :shakehead the whole phrase "well recess is a time when accidents happen" did anyone ever tell that guy the definition of an accident? a mistake. i can't wait until this generation moves on and people in the current 15-30 group are in charge of things. if any one of you tries to make up bullshit rules like this...well there'll be hell to pay.

and i agree about the homeschooling thing. i always felt bad for kids who were homeschooled because without the daily contact with people their own age, they turned out kind of socially retarded. *no offense to people here who are homeschooled and actually enjoy it* i wouldn't ever homeschool my future children for that reason but if stuff like this happens where they attend, i foresee me having a lot of "chats" with the administration.

i don't think that's true at all. they may not develop the same social skills as those who go to a large school, but there's nothing to say they would be "socially retarded".

i didn't mean like completely but every single home schooled kid i've talked to who doesn't have much contact with kids their own age just acts a little *different*. they're not totally weird but just more awkward. if that makes sense to you.

i know what you mean, but the phrasing was open to misinterpretation.

yes, some of them are more shy, and are hesitant to interact with other sometimes. as you'd expect, this is because they've had more limit contact and interaction with others their own age.

This is the stupidist thing i have heard im planning on having kids and soon and im glad there not doing that where i am. I also see nothing wrong with andre 3000 giving his kid a gun at 9. I got my first shotgun a 12ga mosberge pump when i was 6 and 1/2 and when i turned 12 i had a 9mm handgun. I never turned out to be a bully or nothing i also dont know if you were being sarcastic. I cant belive that some ppl got to ruin all of the kids fun now every one wants to be stupid and sue over dumb stuff. I mean if its faulty equipment or another shoves a kid down on purpose then i can see that but not because of tag.

It seems anyone can sue anyone nowadays, I can completely understand the school's decision.

Parents are pussies.
It still shouldn't happen.

Accidents happen at school, and there should be a clause by the school districts lawyers that prevent lawsuits in these instances. We all scrapped our knee, bumped heads with other kids and so on. If I ran into a parent that actually supported this I think I'd kick their ass.

Wow. I thought them limiting recess time was bad enough. First they complained that their kids were getting fat, then they cut down the excercise time from half a hour to 10 minutes. What sense does that make? Tag was one of the best games ever as a child. Kickball had to be the best though. These people need to be slapped with a 9-iron.

we used to play king of the hill in winter. the school would have all the snow from the playground stuffed into one huge pile so we'd go on it and start wrestling and pushing eachother off. that's how i tore a tendon in my finger and had to get surgery. i guess it's different in canada though, people sue others way less here and we have universal health care so the parents don't pay for any medical procedures.

What happened to the good old days where you could jump from the top of the swing and kick somebody in the head, or fall off the steel monkeybars and crack your head open on cement, peg a kid in teh nuts with a softball, or kick the crap outta somebody on the blacktop and the worst that happened was you spent 5 minutes of recess standing against a brick wall.

I mean they used to stock our nurse's office solely with pepto bismol for this exact reason. If some kid cracked his head open, he got a spoonful of that pink crap, a teenage mutant ninja turtles bandaid and was back on those same concrete and steel monstrosities 3 minutes later. Nobody cared, and we were fine with it. I don't recall anybody in my 4th grade dying during recess....certainly not from playing tag.

I'm sure if enough people protest, the government will figure out a way to tax recess and then the kids will be able to play it again...of course only under close state and local supervision.

There will soon come a day when the school requires all parents to sign a release form at the beginning of the year, relinquishing the school of any fault if the child gets injured. I can only imagine what they would do to the child whose parent's didn't sign it, spend recess in a padded room perhaps?

Man what kind of pansy shit is that. I remember in elementry, we'd play Suicide Wall Ball, fuckin have acorn throwing wars, baseball, run time trials through the playground, we even played that game where two kids hang on the monkey bars and kick each other off. I remember in high school I busted this one kid in the face during dodgeball, it was like a long range bomb too. Threw it from one side of the gym and hit him as soon as he turned around on the other side of the gym. Still one of the most satisfactory feelings of my life. Bastard.

Tag related injury's have increased a whopping 17% over the past decade? Well now we can all sleep easier knowing that our children are safer on the playground.
