95 jetta 3 gl 2.0 8v manual. i posted earlier with no response.. i have checked everything that i think could be the cause of this abnormality.. the car runs fine on the highway until your get into stop/go traffic, then it'll start jerking when the rpm's are at a constant range (varies).. i can shift down to a lower gear and accelerate smooths out until it stops gaining rpms or decreases in rpms. when the car starts to act up the rpms DO NOT jump just the car--- very strange-- i'm pretty good with cars but this has me stumped.. oh the car some times has to turn over a num of times inorder to start.. things checked coil, rotor button and cap, changed spark plugs, checked wires, check temp sender, hall sender (seems ok), pulled air intake and cleaned, idle control parts and cleaned, mass airflow senser, thro body cleaned, checked fuses, relays, checked wiring for corrison.. running out of ideas please help any ideas or replies may help

It sounds like it may not be firing on all cylinders. It could be a clogged fuel injector. When you changed the plugs did you inspect to see if there was nay difference between them? Another possibility would be the engine control unit. Check for engine codes. I can't recall if the 95 is obd II or not, but an automotive store should be able to help you regardless.
One other possiblility is the transmission, it could have a broken tooth causing a slip. Do you have the jumping in all gears. If it were an older car I'd recommend checking the differential. You probably should have the CV joints checked.

this weekend i'm going to repull the plugs and see what i got, i didnt look close at the plugs when replaced them, til the other day and all where white tipped except one was alittle brownish, nothing to notice until this problem showed up... the engine light hasn't came on at all through this-- would there still be codes without the engine light coming on? and the jerking is in all gears, cv joints are fairly new.. went through important stuff other month . where is the engine control unit on these cars, looked can't find it.. thanks for the reply

Heavy carbon build up on one plug could indicate a bad piston and or valve seals and oil getting into the cylinder. Brownish with no build up could be the cylinder isn't firing. It could be other things as well, but it's a possibility.
If the one cylider is brownish again, recheck your dist cap, recheck/replace your plug wires. Coil won't cause problems on only one cylinder. Only possiblities I can come up with on one cylinder only having problems are: clogged injector or bad plug (or plug wire) or less likely: bad rings, bad piston, bad head gasket.

the motor is strong, sounds good nothing pinging or rattling in in way, i have let it sit idling for aleast 20 mintues, in order to make sure the fans where kicking on like they were suppose to..and the idle was smooth, reveved it up a few times no hesitation, it seems to be only hesitation cranking (hot/cold) and in stop and go driving.. like i say i'll know more when i pull the plugs and see what i got.. do you think that a clogged injector would cause this in s/g driving more so then highway? lke i said before thanks for the input i'll holla back after i pull the plugs this weekend

The brown color often is an indication of oil burning. One thing I came up with just now is that the pcv valve may be defective Check it's function, air should be able to go through in one direction only. If it's clogged, it can force oil into the engine. the only problem is that it usually happens to all cylinders. There is a good chance your valve seal stem is in bad order. Check your compression, it should tell you a lot about the condition of the inside of the cylinder. Especially note differences in pressure between cylinders. If you have oil going into the cylinder (bad valve seal) you'll generally get build up on the valves and it will kill your compression. Compression testers are fairly cheep. About $20 at most autoparts places and $10 at discount tool places.

well here's and update of my little car, pulled the intake off, down to the fuel rail cleaned everything with electronic cleaner and gas depending on what i was cleaning.. pulled the spark plugs and the #2 plug was discolored from the others but still looked good jus the coloring.. was going to pull the injectors but couldn't depresurize the fuel system cuz the intake was off so decided to wait on that.. but anyway put it all back together. my wife started driving my rodeo to work which is 3 miles and i started driving the car to my work (60 mile round trip daily), so i could see what the car was doing everyday instead of when i had a chance to drive it, i ran higher octane gas and used -seaform- cleaner the first two fill ups and almost a month later i have yet to have the same problem.. so i'm guessing the injectors where clogged from years of stop go driving and the car jus needed to be driven-- now that is said i going to find a piece of wood to knock on so i dont jinks myself...
