My mother is heartbroken that this child has broken her trust but cannot bare to press charges because it would be considered a felony because her book value is 7500 which will make it a level D felony which could give him at 16 time in jail and most likey will. he probaly kept neutral bombing it, meaning hed rev the engine up in neutral and then dropped it into drive. Or he could have tried to manually shift thru the gears, starting in first then workin it up to drive. Either way the transmission is screwed, and you could probaly get it rebuilt for about 2000 dollas at most id think. I suggest both parties get some money or pull out a loan and get it fixed. Otherwise buy a new car.
FYI transmissions don't just blow up under normal driving conditions, hes lying to not get into trouble, I ve done it b4.

The transmission is an A604...the worst chrysler ever made. Believe me, there are over 50 TSBs (technical service bulletins) on this transmission and yes.......looking at it the wrong way can make it break. It's that bad!!!! If your Mom hasn't had work on the transmission since she bought it, it was a miracle in itself. She's over due......... Go to your browser and do a search on the A604. You'll see alot of bad press on the transmission!

It could have been either of these. Yes A604 was a horrible transmission, but if she has babied it then it should not just fail without good thrashing. I have owned vehicles with the A604 and ad no problems because I took care of them. I bet there was some foul play. Either way the best thing to do would be to buy a new better model transmission.

I wrote mine off driveing down the highway, nothing but highway miles on the van, correct fluid even changed it a few times ... The A604 41te's from dodge are peice of crap ... And it's always the hard parts that fail, gears dropping right out the bottom, diff pins leaving the top, cores distroyed (( extra $750 )) In short he might be telling you the truth and he was not neutal bombing it, It might of been over due for a problem, mine was by 7,000 miles .... 107,000 on a 99
((And the A606 42LE's are also from the same trash pile))

I've had to have 3 A604's rebuilt (2 under warranty and one I paid for) on a '97 Gr Voyager.

First,
Which trans do you really have?
second,
Was it ever serviced?
Try putting a filter and the right fluid in it. (ATF+3)
stranger things have happened.
Mine still works after 115K and a $1500.00 scare that turned out to be the fluid and a filter (a $50.00 fix).
And I'm NOT kidding.
