sup ppl i was wondering is a 420A motor a interferance motor if the timming bet snaps or skips teeth will the valves bend or will it need a top head

:screwy:
i guess it depends on how many teeth it skips

lol its just like any other motor that i know of... if the valves are open when the piston is TDC, it will bend the shit out of it... :2cents:

Knowing from experience, yeah, most likely. When my timing belt broke, it bent the intake valves and cracked a valve guide. Luckily it didn't mess the head up.

There are motors that don't die because of a broken timing belt. An MR2 has an engine that is one of them. There are more engines out there than 4G63's and 420a's :p He used the context correctly.

Yes it's an interference engine (meaning that the valves and pistons overlap, but not at the same time) and if you skip too many teeth or break the timing belt, your valves will go bendy bendy. Just ask myself or Thor about how bending valves goes. If you've bent some valves, but not badly, you can just have them replaced without needing new guides or anything, but if you bent them very badly, you'll need new guides too. But in any case, you will not need a whole new/different head (although sometimes its cheaper).
And next time please use proper grammer.

 Yeah, bending valves is fun! Almost as fun as throwing bearings. Fuck drugs, I can break engine parts! Ha ha...
Yeah, I heard that the MR2 wont bend valves if the t belt skips/snaps but I never knew why. Learned something today other than what DNA is made of :banghead:.

How many miles did you have when yours broke?

My belt decided to fail and my pistons knocked the valves off the head and imbedded them through the top of the piston.

Gotta love it when that happens. I'm surprised that never happened to me, or hasn't yet (knocks on wood)

my belt didn't snap it just skipped a few teeth so u guys still think i could have bent valves with a few teeth skipped?

if it only skiped afew theeth its should be ok.
i always refer to it as a "free spining" motor the ford rangers and mazda pick ups i know are free spining motors

Its very possible still in this case. My brothers balance belt broke and got tangled in his timing belt and skipped it a few teeth and he bent several valves.

If it skipped more than about 2 teeth there's a good chance that you bent some valves.

I picked it up at a local junkyard it was out of a '99 GS, the guy said it had only about 62,000 on it. I'm just guessin it got ran really hard. I didn't have time to rebuild it and just swapped the two out. But a couple months later I wished that i had rebuilt it or took the time to replace certain important things.
