01 key/ignition switch

got a ? for you all. how hard is it to change the key/ignition switch? son's car- hubby has change many, but with this being newer car, will it mess with the air bag, chip, ect? or can he go around it? wanted to see if he could change it without taking it to shop, which they will charge loads probably and son doesn't have that much money to do this. he may just have too though, lol. any help would be appreciated, thanks!!!!!!!!!

It will not affect the air bags if he unplugs the battery and lets it sit for a while before attempting this just to let the charge in the systems capacitor diminish.
