I have a '98 GMC Sierra. It's a 3 door ext. cab. I have a plain jane am/fm cassette radio in it and would like to upgrade. A buddy of mine has a 2004? or '05 Chevy Silverado with a killer factory Bose radio. It's an AM/FM 6 disc Cd, and XM/Sirius satellite capable radio. It will play cd's I've made, as well as mp3's. So for me this would be the "shizzle" :grinyes: . Especially considering I burn my own cd's/mixes and being in the sticks here in MinneSNOWDA, I don't have much to choose from in radio stations.
My question is:
Has anyone attempted and SUCCEEDED in making this swap? I have a model # for reference sake- GM # 15917881 . I've been told it won't work on 2001 or older vehicles-but I'm stubborn and want to make it work! (DETERMINED!!!) :screwy: I realize I'd have to get a new/different harness-but I'm willing to do what it takes to make this work! Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me! ~Woody

Yes you can "MAKE" it fit and work, but it is not a "direct fit" replacement unit and a question would be, why would you want to go through all that for a stock unit when there are aftermarket units that would be a better fit and are quite reasonably priced?
Most head units sold these days will play burned cd's and have most of the options you mentioned, I have 4 different brands in 4 different vehicles right now and even my oldest "pioneer" unit plays my home burned cd's, which like you is pretty much all I listen to.
I can see your wish to install this unit in your truck if it comes very close to free but would caution you against tearing into your dash just to "make" it fit, it could hurt your resale value when or if you want to sell your truck.
If you ever wish to return it to stock condition dash pieces can be pricy and hard to find a perfect color match as fading can be an issue.
A friend of mine has the very same unit you mentioned in his 05 and yea it does sound pretty good but the aftermarket unit in my old 91 sounds just as good if not better in some ways.
you might want to check into all of your options before you become too determined about this one particular unit.

Good point...I guess I was thinking one track minded. I honestly didn't think aftermarket made such a critter with all of those options! But I see on Crutchfield that there is many! Thanks for the info-and the BIG heads up!

I agree with everyone else on this, just go with an aftermarket radio. My oldest pioneer plays all my mp3's and looks better than a stock one to boot (not even counting the remote I have for it). Besides, Bose systems are nice and all, but they are a major pain to upgrade once you have them in. A friend of mine had a few subs and amp installed and had to purchase extra equipment just to make it function with his high end Bose head unit. Waste of money if you ask me.
Good Luck,
