99 Rodeo Automatic won't go into 4WD

My Rodeo with 105,000 miles refuses to go into 4wd. The green 4wd indicator lights blink but never go steady indicating it is engaged in 4wd. About a week ago, I began having trouble with the shifter too. It will start in park but I can't depress the button on the shifter to get it into drive. This forces me to start the car in neutral then put it in gear.
Are these related problems? or separate ones and what can I do to solve them?
Thanks

It could be range sensor needs cleaning. Also try to engage 4x4 on flat surface.

also for your 4 wheel drive you might check the Actuator or Solenoid - for theTransfer Case. this actually shifts your truck into 4 wheel and the light will continue to flash if it does not fully engage. I hope these will be helpful
