Rattling noise.....A/C..........

My car has this loud rattling noise, metal on metal, that I can't find. It sounds like something that is being turned by the serpetine belt. I put a listening scope and can't find the culprit. However, when I turn the A/C on, you can hear it engage and the noise stops. Turn the A/c off, rattling noise comes right back. Hints?????

A/C Compressor clutch. Thats gona run you a pretty penny for a new compressor, just a heads up. Its not worth just trying to replace that portion of the unit. But if your to take it to a dealership, you lookin at $450 easily. G'luck.

Only the crazies would take their car back to the dealer to get fixed!!!!!!!!!!! It sounds like the A/C clutch. Try one of your local shops around town they would be less expensive than the dealer.

I've got a 96 cav with a similar issue. The difference is that the a/c is not working due to the evaporator leaking & i have no freon in system.

My compressor clutch is making a grinding noise and my question to everyone is:

Is it possible to buy a new drive belt and just eliminate the a/c compressor or is this a case of having to add an additional idler pulley to go in place of the compressor? I am afraid the compressor clutch is going to lock up sometime at a very bad time.

Had to do this once on a friends 92ish Dodge Intrepid. Just getting the dirvebelt for a cavy without ac may work, but if it doesnt you can always measure. Take a piece of rope or string, and route it along all the pulleys that you need to connect. measure the string and match it up at the parts store. However, if it is a v-belt, make sure that the string is large enough not to fall completely into the groove of the pully, other wise you will end up with a belt that is too small.

New drive belt works good. I also did use a string to bet the measurement & it would have worked as well. Thanks for the replys.
