I have a 96 civic that has a diffrent cluster in it and the speedometer goes crazy in it and the odometer does not count the miles. we changed the fuses, belts, battery and alternator but it still didn't fix it. Can anyone help me please? Thanks, Amber

Could have a bad gauge. There is only one wire that goes from the speed sensor on the trans to the gauge cluster to send speed. If the speedometer is displaying a speed when your driving its either the odometer part of the gauge is bad or there is a break in the curcuit board its attached to. I would lean more to a bad gauge.
You say the gauge cluster is different what exactly is it out of?

Yeah we got a new sensor for it and if that does not fix it we will try the new cluster. we dont really like it anyway. I think its an after market cluster but I dont know. Its ugly ;) thanks!!

Ok, If the sensor was bad than the check engine lite would be on. Basicaly the sensor sends the speed info to the PCm. If it doesn't recieve it and the PCM sees that the vehicle is moving based on the sensors in the trans the check engine will be turned on.
